You Just Can'T Make Shit Like This Up....

Where do I begin? I am a long time employee of a well know garbage hauling company....a tough job even with a good boss...but this guy is a piece of work...here goes:

(1) One employee, whose mother has cancer, comes in the office and tells him the hospital has called the family in because she is near death. His response: I would rather be riding on the back of a garbage truck than sitting in a hospital room waiting on someone to die.....

(2)He routinely withholds a quarterly bonus from us. Currently we are three quarters behind. When asked about this he says " I don't get one why should I be in a hurry to get yours"

(3)Our dispatcher whose father was in hospice came in the day before he died and told our boss she needed to go spend some time with her dad....his response....I have to go to McDonalds and get an egg mucmuffin. He left and came back three hours later. The girls dad died the next day.

I could write volumes more but wont...for now...this guy is so awful, no one believes us when we tell it..

Sounds like this guy is all about himself and could give a leap about anyone else. He is totally dissatisfied with HIS life and he had this desire to make everyone suffer along with him.

As to the having a family member passing away - I'd leave and make that visit. You can always get another job! And speaking about other jobs, does they lifeless bag of air have a boss over him? If so then I would start going over his head! And if that didn't work then I would organize a 'sick-out' with my co-workers and see how the office runs without everyone. What could he do - fire EVERYONE? It would be pretty hard to quickly replace everyone and still run a business!

Time to leave this job . When it comes to family the company is not worth working for if they don't allow for these types of things . A good employer would not allow this to happen. I also would not be concerned about on what terms you leave on ..just get out .

While KitKat suggests leaving - jumping ship, it does not resolve the issue for others - just yourself. Leaving is always an option and dependent upon you ability to get another job. But considering that the economy is not that fruitful and that they are predicting another recession your options may be limited. Funny (not ha,ha but sick) that employers take advantage of employees when there is a downturn in the economy.

Our site is a small one. Less than 20 of us work here. Another time he was told to cut 40k from our budget. He always looks for the easy way out so what does he do? We are paid an hourly incentive so he cuts the goals that determine the incentive making it impossible to make incentive, so by doint that he cuts our wages. I lost six thousand a year. Put that with what the other drivers lost and he got most of the required cut to the budget. Now, we are picking up garbage. Believe you me, anything we are paid we earn and a cut is just irreprehensible. What really irks me about this guy is he is in church every time the door is open.....uggggg....

SO you are tell us that he prays on his knees on Sunday and preys on the employees the rest of the week!

Is this person overweight? He seems like a piece of shit. Has anyone over explained to him that his comments hurt peoples feelings? You should not have to put up with that crap. How about going to his supervisor? Or are they crap too.

We are planning on going to the DM in the next week or two. We thought we can make it till this guy retires. He had originally told everyone he was retiring in February when he turns 62. This past week he tells everyone he is working five more years to age 67. Shit, we couldn't take five more years of him. We are going to have to do something...

WalkingInMyOwnShoes(01/06/2008)
Um, the old "I will retire soon" game. A supervisor and her creature were playing this game when I got my first serious job. They were still at it years later, even so the supervisor had been demoted and transfered because she listed someone full time who only worked part time and studied full time.
Don't forget to mention your still pending bonuses when talking to the DM.

In case you are hauling in my neighborhood you are doing a great job!

Dumber than a Catbox full of sh*t(01/06/2008)
Whether or not your Boss is getting his bonuses is irrelevant--he is the leader and to be a good leader you put your team first. How terribly unprofessional of him!

Corporate Ladder Rung: CIOCK(01/06/2008)
Sorry Cat but being the boss does not entitle one to be "leader" by any means! I had a Graduate class on Leadership and by the sound of it he is not leading anyway! To lead you have to have followers - who's following this guy? If you are a leader with no followers then you are just out having a walk by yourself!

Dumber than a Catbox full of sh*t(01/06/2008)
That's my point, CK!

Suppose he fought for the workers despite him being crapped-on--then he would have the followers....

ResearchScientist(01/07/2008)
Taking a class in leadership does not make one a leader either. A person has to have a certain charisma and charm and a positive energy about him/her. This guy sounds like he has neither and he also sounds like he is a negative energy generator, which means he is an emotional vacuum. He will suck the life right out of you.

Corporate Ladder Rung: Mailroomsickofit(01/08/2008)
He does suck all the positive energy right out of the entire crew. You described this guy perfectly. When he is away on vacation the change in our crew is like night and day. People are laughing and enjoying work...and we get more done. Well, the company has commissioned Gallup to survey the company nationwide(52k employees). They are trying to cut down on turnorver, which is running at 26%. I did mine and called it in yesterday. The questions were all related to management with questions like "Does your supervisor care for you as a person" or "Has your supervisor told you you have done a good job in the last seven days?" There were 20 questions. Of course we got together and did the worst we could to him....we were told there would be two more followup surveys in the next 90 days. I am anxious to see where this goes....

Keep us informed. I am very interested how this works out. Several plots are already forming in my head but there is always the hope that upper management got their act together.

Corporate Ladder Rung: Mailroomsickofit(01/09/2008)
I will keep you informed...another story, this one on how he lays someone off. We lost a municipal contract and so we knew about six weeks in advance we were going to have to lay a guy off. I asked our jackass five weeks before the lay off had he informed the guy. No he said. I asked the next week with the answer being the same...no.....the Friday before the Monday the guy was going to be unemployed I asked again, "Have you told him?" No he said. So Monday morning arrived and he HAD to tell the poor guy. So what does he do? He goes up to the guy, places his feet on top of the unfortunate guy's feet, gets in his face and says "You don't have a job here anymore!" The guy in total shock picks up a coffee pot and throws it at him, then a fire extinguisher. Unfortunately he missed with both attempts. The police were called and the guy escorted off the property. Our compassionate supervisor immediately lies to the DM, telling him he was attacked by this guy unprovoked. The guys severence was not given to him, which is normally one months pay and benefits for each year of service. Again, we have so many stories on this guy, and they are so outrageous, that no one believes anyone can be this bad, but he is.....every day when we get there its the same thought "God help us"......

buy a gun and kill him

Juggle grenades around the office to create a sense of foreboding. You will get the respect you richly deserve.
