During the same time I was working as a sales clerk (Early - Mid 80's), the cheapie $7.00 phones suddenly came to market. Our store had a bunch of these in plastic bags and we sold quite a bit of these.
One day, a very attractive lady came to my area carrying a plastic bad with the stores name on it, obviously a return.
Again, my manager was counting receipts.
Remember how people dressed in the 80's? This lady had parachute pants on, rabbit fir jacket and Farah Fawcett type hair. Very pretty and obviously out of my league and I was speechless as she headed towards me.
She plunked her bag down, pulled out one of the cheapie phones and said "I've had this phone for three days and it hasn't rung once! Do you know what is wrong?"
Before I could stop myself, I said "Gee lady, maybe no-one wants to talk to you!"
She stepped back with her eyes wide open and then began laughing and I just grabbed a new phone and tossed her to her. She put it in her bag and with a wink, she left.
My manager walked up and said "I have NO idea how you got away with that!"
A funny thing about those phones. During this time the foreign students at my university figured out that each dorm had "courtesy" phones in the lobby and they were not blocked and they were able to make long distance phone calls to home!
SO...the university simply PULLED OUT the phones but left the phone jacks. So the students simply bought these cheapie phones and carried them in their backpacks and would plugg them into the phone jacks and make their calls...
