Walk Softly

A while back (ok, 15 years) I worked at a school district as a PC technician. It was really a decent job and I truly enjoyed traveling to each of the 25 schools reparing computers. More than half of the time I would not even have to come into the office but would simply report to a school, check in with the department secretary to get my work list for the next hour and work away. Cell phones were not even on the horizon at this time but I did have a pager that I kept on vibrate mode so I would not disturb the students if I was working during a "live class".

One day, I was asked to go to a high school to repair a PC in a business classroom and reported after the students had been released. I met the teacher in the teachers work lounge and she told me which room number her class was and that the student teacher in there would show me the PC.

So, off I walk to the classroom....on a carpeted hallway...in my sneakers. (setting the scene up).

By the way, I am 6' 3" and not exactly a wimp by any means.

So, off I go, not thinking about how quite I am walking and I make it to the carpeted classroom and see the student teachers back. So I began walking towards her when my beeper buzzed quietly, so I kept walking but looked down.

At this moment (from what I can figure out), she must have taken a step backwards and then spun around while I was walking forward.

The end result is suddenly she is about 1/4" inchs from me and is looking up at me with HUGE eyes and I am looking down at her!

So, I immediately say "HEY! I'M HERE TO...."

She jumps back yelling and leaps onto a table screaming and I leap back yelling because she has startled me!

A maintenance guy comes running in yelling "WHAT!? WHAT!? WHAT!?".

After a while, we manage to calm her down and I show her my employee badge and manage to convince her it was truly an accident.

After that, I made sure I knocked on any empty room when I walked in.
