The Fear Factor

Tags: Management Strategies, Difficult co-workers, Anti-bullying techniques,

Recently, a company I work for had to deal with a very obnoxious employee. This person refused to do certain tasks, had an obvious attitude, and so on. They needed to be let go, were in fact asking for it. However, the company hesitated. I found out that some sexual stuff was involved, but as we all are independent subcontractors to the company, this consensual affair probably wouldn't become a legal issue.

The real issue was fear. Management had put up with some of this crap for years and now was intimidated by the full-blown nature of the behavior. She was an obvious bully, and actually a coward. She made a crap comment to me and I told her that she could probably explain her case to the judge. After that, I aggressively shut her down-no contact, no conversation, nothing. You could see that she was shaken by the fact that I had figured her out so fast. Probably everyone else had allowed her to creep up on them.

She's now done working for us, and I took over a chunk of her territory. So much the better...

If you have to go to management about a problem co-worker, let them know that they can expect the tactics to continue. After all, when someone picks a fight with a co-worker, they are wasting time on the company's tab. It's called wage theft. Treat it as such and label the bully with a big red sign. You'll love yourself for it, but remember, IT TAKES COURAGE!

"It takes courage". In the face of the bully, that is very difficult but necessary. It even takes courage to act ike you don't care what they're doing to you. I think I forget that at times. Thanks for the post!

Thanks for the feedback....and for pointing out the quiet heroes that stoically withstand the bullying tactics of these sick people. When I worked at that nightmare of a radio station, we had at least two people that would taunt and insult others until they would blow...even saying "stop that" would result in the owner being told that you had sworn at the bully. It wasn't until several of us started openly writing down their words and actions in front of them. Bullies hate the truth about themselves, that's why they tell so many lies about others...

I meant to say that writing and in some cases recording their statements and actions, put the brakes on them. Sorry, my coffee hasn't kicked in yet!

Oh yeah, avid reader, the bit about "the courage to act like you don't care what they're doing to you"... - you gotta believe that your blood pressure - especially since you're the Good Guy, goes up in confrontational situations with bullies (be they male or female). But you have to remember that Freedom and Peace of Mind should prevail above all else, even the possibility of losing your job. Courage defines individuality and when you compromise, that which "defines" you as being the truest and best you, blurs around the edges, and dissembles. - Hang tough! Victoria
