I have been working at a small company for about 6 months. I took this job because I wanted to experience a small company family atmosphere and be a part of the growth process. I was previously employee at a very large corporation I was under some illusion that a small company would be like a happy family. I have never seen the amount of back biting here anywhere else. Really horrible and personal attacks.
My boss is a wiener. He bad mouths his superiors in front of me and generally bullies everyone. My first week on the job was a clear indication of his lack of professionalism. I was in IT as a Network Admin/System Admin for many years and was highly compensated. My first week on the job he called me to his desk and asked if I could make it so that when he starts Windows Media Player it would show this movie. He them shows me the movie. Debbie does Dallas.
Over the months it has been one thing after another. We were turning up a new (NOC) Network Operations Center. I thought it would be fun to be a part of this. I developed a turnover log and ticketing system in my first month of employment. It was mostly done on my time and not part of my job duties but it was an essential application to ensure we could succeed.
He did abosolutly nothing for us so something had to be done to avoid failure.
For several months I begged for input and for him to look at it. I gave up and continued development on it. Then one day, out of the blue, he begins yelling at me to implement it. As I questioned this decision because nobody had looked at it I was yelled at by a man of over 340lbs standing over me. That tirade went on for several excruciating minutes as coworkers ducked for cover. Within minutes, his peer calls him to tell him that he was a little rough. The conversation went like:
Peer, "How did he react"?
Boss, "PISSY! AND ASK ME IF I CARE"!
All while he is sitting literally 5 feet away. Since then it has just gotten worse. I do not think he hates me. I know he does. How? I have overheard him tell the owner several times that he does not like me while talking on the phone with ten feet and a thin wall between us.
I have far exceeded all job expectations. Created doc, tools and processes to make this a real NOC... I took over a sixty percent pay cut to come here and have mentored coworkers. To develop applications and processes, in addition to exceeding my job funtions I would expect better treatment. Especially since I am only make 12 bucks an hour here!
Needless to say I am looking. This is a hostile environment, and just not worth it... I can be sensative but my boss is a ballpark wiener!

Holy crap...I bet he's not even a pure beef kosher weiner but one of those cheap ones made from chicken lips. I am really sorry this happened to you. I am in IT too and like you, we're all looking to go to smaller companies...so your move made complete sense. You did the best you could and can be proud of yourself for that. Add your great work to your resume and move on...you can do better. Give him a bottle of mustard on your last day.

Small companies can be worse than larger ones in this way. Bullies like your boss are afraid of anyone more capable than they. Talented folks like yourself leave, and the company loses. Wait til he shows porn to the wrong person and the company gets sued!
