Well...today I have officially seen it all. This morning my boss came in like a raving lunatic. I thought he must have gotten into a fight at home or something because he came in ready to have another one. He came in and stomped all the way to his office. His office is all glass so we all watched as he flung his newspaper against the wall. In the past he's always said he doesn't believe "in curse words" so we were not surprised (but nonetheless entertained) when he began loudly saying "Flanagan!" (his "F" word) and slamming things around. I cringed when he looked up and saw me looking at him. He pointed his finger at me and mouthed the words "Get in here". Relunctantly I went...fearing I was about to get yelled at. He shuts the door behind me and tells me to have a seat. He then proceeded to ask me how he did. And I stuttered out, "Did what?" and he got a glimmer in his eye and asked me how he did acting mad. All I could say was "Yes". And he starts telling me how it was all a ruse because today is his 50th birthday and he doesn't want anybody to make a fuss or a party so he thought that if he came in raving mad, people would cancel whatever they had planned. (huh???) I did not have the heart to tell him that none of us even knew it was his birthday and that nobody planned anything. And I was so taken aback by this ridiculous plan that I found myself kissing his butt and telling him it was brillant. So he gives me 'the job' of putting the word out that he doesn't want a party and that he's mad about something but he instructs me that I am not to repeat our conversation and actually made me act out what I was gonna say... I told him "well, I guess I'll just say, 'guys, I don't think it's a good idea today'" and he says, "No! Say you think everything should be cancelled because it looks like it might cause a 'shake up'" and then he made me practice that. I kept substituting words and he insisted I put the words 'shake up' in my sentence. When he was satisfied with my perfomance, he let me leave and then slammed the door after I left for added effect or something. What a freak!! The whole scene was just so bizarre that I can't work now because I am not sure what happened. One thing's for sure...I don't have to tell anyone not to do anything because no one even knows about his stupid birthday. But you better believe they'll hear about this story.

Good for you, Keachie. The nerve of that guy. Surprised he didn't just go out and register for gifts. But the guy in megamania's story seems like just maaaaybe he wanted the attention after all.

>I found myself kissing his butt and telling him it was brillant.< LOL Why do we stuff liek that anyway? I am ashamed to admit I've done it before with bosses and then kicked myself afterwards for selling out so easily!

At my last job we were routinely asked for birthday money, baby shower money, etc, for a floor of about 60 people. It got so expensive and so frequent (every week or so it was someone new) I quit doing it. I think there should be a policy AGAINST doing this.

Reminds of a jerk I once worked with that subtley reminded everyone that his birthday was coming up, then recruited a secretary into making a collection. I told them it wasn't in my budget...
