..when the person interviewing you excuses themselves 5 TIMES during the interview to answer the phone/return the calls, with you sitting right there? Just sayin'.

Oh and she also, when I came in, picked up the folder I'd brought with me and started going through it, saying, "What's this?" and looking all confused. Even though I had ALREADY handed her the resume and application, and did not hand her the folder!!!

very telling about how seriously they took the interview. Man, cynic, at least you're getting a lot of laughs out of it. I am sure every day you wake up and sigh heavily and think "not this again!". I know I would! Hang in there!

I got this in my inbox a few days ago: http://www.cubiclecartoon.com/cubicle_cartoon.cgi?id=19 appro pro

Sheila--That is pretty funny. Avid--Yeah, I have the feeling that they might already have someone in mind and are doing this only as a formality. I got there through a recruiter though, but this often happens--the recruiter says "Go for it, you're qualified" and the interviewer says "No way."

Also, after my making the effort to impress her by talking about their website (while she looked at me as if I had a nose nugget the size of texas), at the end she asks, "So, did you check out our web site...at all?" I don't think she was listening, or really cared to be honest.

How stupid are these people that they don't realize job applicants are on to their tricks? As I said earlier, "Those who can, work. Those who can't, get jobs in HR."

Corporate Ladder Rung: VPthe cynic(06/22/2006)
Yeah. She was a jabberer too--one of those who keeps talking about the position, but lets you talk very little. "It's NOT a glamorous job. We REALLY need someone who can multitask, I mean it is a LOT of work. A LOT of work. So, do you have any questions?" Uh HELLO...can you give me a chance to talk about my experience at all? I *can* do all of those things...

Sounds like the job interview in the beginning of "The Devil Wears Prada." I'm telling you, the dregs of the work world go into HR!

You've just inspired me to see that movie!! I thought it looked good. I also have the book, and should get around to reading it.

I'm halfway through the book, but the movie looks pretty true to the book — at least from the trailers.

I'm scared that in the end, the long suffering apprentice BUYS into it... as in the part where the Prada wearing "Devil" says 'You remind me of myself"..."and "everyone out there wants to be US". So...YUCK. Please don't let that be the part where the apprentice supposedly wins by actually becoming the DEVIL. That IS what usually happens, though.

I'm starting the book too. Am just at the part where she's starting the job. At first, you're inclined to be jealous ("My bad interviews always end in rejection--why was she accepted?"), but then seeing the way she's treated, it's clearly a job and a boss I wouldn't want to have.

After a while you learn to avoid toxic bosses in order to protect yourself. What most of us do not know early on is that we've got to have a rainy day fund that will allow us to quit a job in which we have either a toxic boss or a toxic environment. I wish I had known at age 30 that material things don't buy as much happiness as freedom gives you. I would have socked money away to give myself the financial freedom to quit or start my own business.

So far I'm loving the book, because the hyperbole of it just makes you feel better about work in general ("at least my boss isn't THAT big of a jerk; at least my interview wasn't THAT bad!!"). Please no spoilers, but I honestly hope that she grows to resent the job rather than love it. If she grows to love it, then I'll hate her as much as I hate her boss!!
