Just for fun-- who predicts that some companies will use the "bird flu scare" as an excuse to cut corners, not hire or give raises, and be misers?
When I graduated in 2001, it was "Bush's economy" that made my college boss "unable to afford" to hire student hourlies who wanted to become permanent research assistants (except for the budget set aside for those who went drinking with the staff on a nightly basis).
After 9/11, it was, well, "the 9/11 economy" that made it hard to find a job. You could get a job as a temp, but benefits became way too expensive. Unless you were the manager's daughter (or something).
Now it's 5 years after 9/11, and last night on the news they were saying that in the "worst case" bird flu scenario, employers will cut corners and lay people off, not to mention trying to replace those who will die in masses from the disease.
Who predicts that employers will start using "Just in case of bird flu" as an excuse not to hire/pay us a living wage? (unless you're the boss's daughter or his drinking buddy)?
(Note the important exceptions in parentheses). :P

Good one!! Although the bird flu might be the excuse to charge more for benefits or stop offering them.

I am a "cynic", too...I think it is kind of brilliant how they set up these "potential" threats, and actually have possible scenarios like closing the borders, setting up checkpoints, even implanting microchips in citizens "for their own protection". Where will it stop? Exactly where we make it stop.
