I joined an organization that had difficulty recruiting for the position. The company received a contract and has never serviced an account such as this. They needed someone to assist them with relationship building, operations and delivering the goods. I accepted the position thinking that I could bring my past knowledge and experience and that I would be able to work for several years at least until retirement. I have done this before for other organizaitons, have worked for years as a successful consultant. I reported to a young MBA hotshot who does not understaned the market nor the client. After one month, she and I decided that it was not a good match. She treated me with disrespect, talked down to me and stated I did not have the skills and was overwhelmed. In the short time I was there I made more progress than she had since she was hired. What bothers me most is that several other managers had difficulty working with this person, her other two employees have requested transfers out of the department, and she is allowed to continue with this behavior. I recently learned that the company had a consultant in to assist with the organizational problems; however, nothing is ever done. She would come in at 8:30 leave at 2:30; call in sick because her dog was sick, you name it she had an excuse for everything. She was not a motivator nor team builder. How did she get hired in the first place? Is this what is happening in the workplace. Incompetence, no management or supervisory skills...just task oriented. Help me understand this.

SouthernProgrammer is exactly right. This IS what it has come down to. I am so sorry, because I can tell that you are a person who is concerned about doing a good job, and being responsible. Unforunately, this sentiment is out-moded. I really think that we have entered into the new millenium of "Who do you know" and "Just getting by".

I worked with a type like this at my last job. She was apparently the daughter or niece of some top exec, and our management was afraid of "repercussions" if they fired or disciplined her. She was allowed to boss everyone around, even down to nitpicking our "phone manner," then she would surf the web and make social calls to her friends all day long. She was paid a higher salary but did less work. She slept with several men in upper management, which got her promoted not fired. She had no college degree; yet she got to work there while I was kept temp because of "no finance degree." It's BS and it's unethical. People should be hired on merit and skill. Period, end of sentence.

You've got to understand something...all the uppper eschelon understands is numbers. They don't care how proficiency is achieved as long as it is achieved.

It's always easy for HR to explain why a regular employee did not work out. It is harder for them to explain why a high-priced manager did not work out...
