Home > How I Quit My Job

Why'd They Do That?

I worked in the Engineering Dept. of a local company. There were only two of us women; we shared an office. We did (in my opinion) excellent work, but the other woman was very free in telling management what she thought, and when they did something shady (often) she would speak up. Somehow the two of us got a very bad reputation in upper management.

Last December the boss called us both in and said they only needed one person in the department -- we were free to apply. Being close friends, we told him we would not compete against each other and both quit.

The department has been struggling ever since. At first they had one woman try to do it all, but she quit. Now they have two women, but they hardly speak English and the department is really going down-hill.

I miss that place every day and, if I thought they would take me back, grab the job and promise the bosses they could lie, cheat and steal to their hearts content and I would keep my mouth shut. Why do companies do things that ultimately hurt their business -- just politics?

I will never for the life of me understand why companies do what they do...why they make the idiotic decisions they make... I am sure it has everything to do with a) being blinded by the almighty dollar and b) the fact that your IQ slides proportionatley lower each time you move up in management.

Why do companies do things that ultimately hurt their business > You know, I am not trying to slam you but you answered your own question. You first said you would not compete against your friend and then you change your mind and say you want the job back...therefore competing against your friend. The answer being...business is business. Offhand I would say it was probably not personal, they just needed ONE person (business could be slowing down) and they offered you both the chance at the job. You both turned it down so they hired someone else who turned out to be bad at it. Again, I doubt it was personal.

PS - At my job, MGMT "downsized" one of my co-workers because they decided they did not need the services he offered. The Manager in charge wanted to cut costs in order to make [gender ommitted]self look good. A year later, customer service was in the toilet and they had to hire TWO people to replace the person they laid off.

It just goes to show: Companies make mistakes, too. They didn't look at the whole picture right.

All companies operate under one rule, that is how can I make the most money. They don't care about people just money. However, I am curious why would you want a job back with a ethically impure company? don't do it as I would wager this company won't stay in business long.

They got to many layers of management and things never get upstairs to the top guy. Eventually it rots from the inside and completely disintegrates
