I had read last week-end in a magazine about the Nat'l. Geo. Special on same channel called "The Human Footprint." It caught my curiosity so I Tivo-ed it. And I watched it--Wow! The displays they have--the lengths they went to to show what we all consume and throw away.
The whole 'Going Green" thing has honestly kind of bugged me--every magazine focuses on it--when I want to read what the purpose of the magazine is--business, fashion--whatever.
But this show really changed me.
I was so inspired that 20 minutes into it, I went on-line to Edline (education program that students can view teacher's messages, grades, lesson plans, etc...I post my lesson plans for the next week every Friday and upload their grades every Friday as well) and did a special post about the show and advertised the watching of it with half a dozen questions about the show (thinking questions) for them to answer. If they bring me a note signed by a parent and the answers to the questions I will give them extra credit. This show is awesome.
Now I am brushing my teeth and washing my face without leaving the water running and I'm going to unplug some of the stuff I always leave plugged-in even when I'm not using it.
What a great show!
For example-- instead of telling you how many oranges you eat in a lifetime--they have an average size living room and put all the oranges in it--really great to visualize what we use and what we waste--really great for kids!
Our metaphysical existence in the developed word is based on fossil fuel usage. Like it or not.
Unless you want to live like the Amish, we will impact the environment in a big way.

BonusOnus, that actually sounds a little cool. I'm serious, I have neo-luddite tendencies. But that's just me, I also thought that those people who live on top of redwoods sounded like they must be having a great time- dude, a treehouse!!
It's a good thing that people are willing to start making even the littlest changes. I have faith that we'll figure things out.
Also, I thought you meant to use the term 'physical' instead of 'metaphysical'. Then I started thinking that this was an interesting way to look at things, like not in the sense that our souls are causing environmental havoc, but the communication of those souls is what's creating mounds of garbage and taking energy, from websites and servers to marketing and books and movies. If all we did was grow food, eat, reproduce and sleep- how much waste would we create then?
Anyway, please don't take offense, I live with a philosophy grad student and right now I'm drinking off a disappointment- I just got 'sorta' fired!

That's really cool. I think this is great time, people are starting to look for better ways to do everything. With the economy taking a downturn, everyone's looking for ways to trim their energy costs.
