I read your article, and it is nice but is of no help to me. I am in a situation where I my boss is the president of the company. He is the biggest lier I have ever seen in my life. He lies about anything and everything he talk about. He never had guts to fire some people and cooked up false stories about company suffering loss and fired those who didnt dance on his finger tips. I am on a temporary work visa and started working after finishing my PhD. He makes me work atleast 12 hrs everyday plus weekends. Apart from my work I have to make labbels for him, photocopy, make coffee and today he told me I need to clean the company bathrooms too since he wants to save money by stopping janitorial service. He gave me big promises before hiring me and now he bullies me saying if I dont put in atleast 60-80 hrs a week at work he will withdrwaw my work visa. He is basically exploiting me. With the current market conditions it is difficult to get another job too for a person like me.
The company is basically full of people who dont have any other job options since we are in the middle of no where and people with family and house can not change cities. I can say this coz, all my coworkers are also sick of him. He comes to work in the evenings and is probably in office for 2-3 hrs max everyday and then comes at night 10 pm and wants us to stay with him till 1 in the morning, coz he might want u to photocopy stuff for him. I know he watches porn sometimes in his office, coz I was typing a letter for him one night and noticed in all sort of porn sites on his internet explorer history.
I can go on and write pages about him but I guess this gives a picture about what kind of person he is.
I dont even know if I can take some kind of action against him or not... but surely will humiliate him in front of everyone the day I quit.

I've got a better idea: Go over your evil boss's head to HIS boss, and anonymously inform him/her of the various porn sites on his web browser history!!!! THAT is a BIIIIIG NO-NO in the workplace!

You should make notes of all his inappropriate behavior and either give that list in to his supervisor and if that does nothing, make a complaint against him at the local state employment office.

Where is the info about the boss being Japanese? I was looking for something like "You work hard or you fired!". I do know of someone who has a Japanese boss and while the boss is a fairly tough taskmaster...he is also very fair and insures his employees are taken care of. But I also have friends who work in Japan and have Japanese bosses and they are INCREDIBLY tough and expect 80 hour work weeks AND after work you have to go drinking with the boss and are EXPECTED to have a mistress and turn your back on your family for work. But, Japanese culture is changing, the new generation of Japanese people do NOT want to work that hard and are wanting LIVES not careers. The "older" generations of bosses and managers are very upset by this.

He sounds like a awful person but what does this have to do with being Japanese?

Are you in the States? He makes you work overtime? Your basically his slave. I am sorry. I do not the particulars of your arrangment.I understand that you have a PHD degree and you are cleaning bathrooms? I totally understand economically depressed cities and areas. I'm sorry but to me as I see it you are just a high priced slave to him. Where is your dignity is what I am thinking. You are probley not the first he has done this to.Perhaps you can check the legalities in your state on Work Visa's and labor rights if you are in the States. Again, if you would state the particulars of your situation perhaps we could better advise, assist, and comment you. I do want to say that I have been in a compromising position before about as bad as you but I have to much pride and dignity ( fault on my part perhaps) to let someone run my life. Worst comes to worst make mention that you need to talk to him about some issues at the workplace and when he makes the time or gives it to you try having a heart to heart. My father always said guilt will eat someone up alive. Good Luck!!!!

I don't think this has anything to do with your boss's nationality. Just keep in mind that in the States, we try not to see color/race/nationality (we try...not saying we all succeed). I agree with the person above stating you need to talk to someone about your work visa status & all of the overtime you're working. Perhaps a lawyer can advise you. It sounds like this man is just a power freak & thinks you'll do whatever he's told. Find out what you can do to stop this nonsense and maybe find another job?
better days (08/06/2006)
I was on a job like this. I reported anonymously how I was being treated, and how others around me were being treated. (I wrote all this out on the back of an envelope and put this on the Human Resources Boss's Desk when she wasn't there, anonymously) Within the next two weeks, other supervisors were checking up on him and I knew something was going on at that point. It took me eight months to do something, but once I did, I found out that another employee had blown the whistle too, but they must have been waiting for more complaints. This was in a production plant that did not want unions to be forming, but since this person was acting like this AND had a following, different people were trying to start up a union. That is another subject entirely, but I will say I was invited to a union meeting from a team leader who was tired of the treatment as well. Long story short, bad guy gone, excellent assistant supervisor now is Main Supervisor, Now there is respect and peace. Trust in Jesus Christ and prayer did not hurt at all either.

To add on to earlier comment, it is mentioned in your article that the boss is the president. Who provides the money to that company? Send an anonymous tip to that person and the others they work closely with. That way the truth will get out. If your boss runs the entire show, go to the local job or employment center and do research into what could be done about a person like this. Since this is definitely job abuse, ( and from what I understand you are not a United States citizen), you need to read up on the history of sweat shops in the United States. Because of industrialization in the U.S., many abuses of a good thing came into being. You need to know your rights not only as a human, or a worker, but also as a guest to our country so you can enjoy the privilege of being here. No one should be treated as such. There are many laws that can be enforced in the workplace. The problem is that people do not report wrongdoing, so it continues. Ask the job or employment center to show you different laws and even look to see if there are somewhere in your workplace in plain sight on a bulletin board, workplace laws against harassment. I have been through all of this garbage not to mention others. Another place to look is an employee handbook. I wish you well in your future.
better days (again) (08/06/2006)
Okay, your boss has threatened to pull your temporary work visa if you did not do all he wants you to do which is obviously too much. I don't know much about immigration and the laws but since this was mentioned about the visa, is there anyone at the Consulate of Oregon, or a main immigrations office of Oregon who could possibly direct you to someone to help you with this issue? Other sources I am thinking of is the Consulate of Chicago, or another main place possibly in California? Another possible shot in the dark would be, so you wouldn't pay so much if finances are an issue-would be a second or third year law student at a university in Oregon. This would give you some info without breaking the bank unless you felt you needed a lawyer to take the person to court. Because of the stress load you are under, I would suggest putting incidences in writing with the date and time of occurence so you have a log to show someone. Plus any other abuses, write it down so it is there when you need to refer to it if taken higher or to the higher authorities (Local or state)or however far you need to take it. Wish you well again!
