During my last year of college I spent many months interviewing for jobs all over the country. After I had a few under my belt, and even my first offer, I found myself at a consulting company interview out of state. They were very open about the salary range for the job to all the candidates. It happened to be the lowest salary offered, but I decided to give it my all anyway. Who knows, maybe the job has other great perks that the higher paying jobs didn't. Anyway, the interview process goes fine, and at the end of the day they pull all the candidates into one room and give us a presentation on what it is like to work there. Apparently the place is like a sweat shop. They openly said that employees were required to work 55 hours/week and that was on the low end. They said most weeks you will put in 80+ hours.
A week later I got an offer letter from them. Just as expected it was about 20% lower than my other offers. When I declined they called me and wanted to know why I was not interested. I told them that per hour, their offer actually was more like half what other companies were offering. They very rudely stated that they were well above the industry average. I told them maybe for McDonalds, but not for the software industry.
