I need some advice.

I have been at my job for six years. I am now the assistant and am in charge of the business most of the time. Most of the time my boss has to come to me for information because he/she does not even know it. The problem. Just recently she hired her mother! Her mother does as she pleases and actually shoots orders to me everyday. I almost blew my top the other day when she started in on her obnoxious blaring but just took a few deep breathes and went on about my day. This occurs everyday. The business in which I work serves the public and I find her actions as obnoxious, embarrassing, and bad for business. She even goes to the point of telling the other workers what to do after I have told them one thing. My boss does not like for anyone to call her mother on anything. She just recently I asked for a raise because I hadn't recieved one in over three years and her mom was making a quarter less and hour than I. This made her mad and she totally went off on me. I am the only person at the company that hasn't recieved a raise this year. But when I ask if there is something I am doing wrong she says no. Her mother as gotten so bad that she is trying to learn how to do my paper work. I will not teach her because I feel it is none of her business. I really do think her mother wants me out of there. Can someone give me some advice on how to handle this situation?

I am sorry to tell you that I had this EXACT situation occur, a few years ago. I was a very happy Front Office Assistant/Secretary, handling most of the clerical work for a small local company. That is, until the Accountant/Office Manager's mother suddenly became a widow. She started coming in to "help out" with filing, and "fill in" for me when I was on lunch, etc. The next step was that the Office Manager (the daughter)suddenly found all kinds of "problems" with me, that no one ever had mentioned before, and began to bad-mouth me to the owner. The last step, on the part of this "mother/daughter" team was to hire an "efficiency expert" who hovered around me tryig to find problems with my work. (Nothing there, but I did find out later that this supposed expert was terminated shortly after this incident for "conflicts of interest".) I found another job, gave my resignation and requested a letter of recomendation. I got a glowing letter, and a covert apology from the General Manger, who whispered to me that I "did not deserve" the way that I was treated. So-you should be prepared. Ce' la vie...

Yup. It's a setup. Punch up your resume and hit the road.

Lace up your running shoes and go! Don't stay and train your replacement, the establishment will fail. Hiring family is a sign that maybe there is trouble to come. Best wishes.

I have to agree with the statement that financial rack and ruin is in the works...The boss is a jellyfish for not dealing with the problem directly. Wonder what he'll do when they go after him?

Do hope somebody is cooking up a good strategy. I also would like to know how to deal with a problem like this safely. More small businesses are family owned and relatives' interference is detrimental to business and employees. As somebody who has been in a similar situation once upon a time you have my sympathy.

I may be a bit paranoid, but it sounds to me like they are positioning the mother to replace you. If they tell you, odds are you would leave without training her. No raise for 3 years? That is bad sign #1. Mom trying to learn your paperwork.... Sign #2. Mom over-riding your orders.... Sign #3. Ask for and NOT get a raise.... Sign #4. Perhaps it is time to start browsing the job market to see what else is out there? Can't hurt to be ready just in case they do have plans you don't know about. Particularly if you are unhappy.
