I've worked at many places over the years, and I've had many managers that I liked and some that I disliked. But what I've never had (until now) is one that lies on a consistent basis. My current boss seems to have trouble listening before speaking. He'll lose his temper, spout off about something making it personal... then he will deny he ever said it. Even if two or three people are in the room, he will still stay "That is not what I said" when confronted. And trust me, he has been confronted on numerous occassions. The team moral is about as low as it can get since no one has any sort of motivation to do good work for this guy. His boss knows he is a screw up, but won't fire him since HE hired him over the cautions of everyone else who interviewed him.
What a mess. I like the company overall, and everyone else that works there. But I can't stand this guy, nor can I motivate myself to do any work for him. Or at least I just do the bare minimum to get by. Do I stay or do I go?

I think that this is becoming more and more common. I wish I could give you an answer to this one. Just document everything, it may become necessary. I did it-hoping I would not need it. However, the situation just got worse and worse, and this means that it became a "hostile work environment" and I have filed charges. OH, and if you can manage to record any of this intimidation, that is even better. It is legal, as it is not a third party recording. Good luck, you will need it.

Can you talk to his boss and explain the impact this man's actions are having on the team and moral? Or maybe you have aready? Perhaps if the boss knew he was risking losing good people things would change?

Dude, I relate to the lack of motivation bit. I hate my boss. He's a longhorned toad and I know I'd be a lot more productive if I didn't have to come here and get bossed around by him everyday. Last year, our company had a survey where you were suposed to tell anonymously how you felt about the company and your manager and stuff. Do you think it ever did any good? Nah, nope, nada. I know other people on my team complained on the survey too but he's still here for whatever reason. Doh!

Document, document, document- first, make sure that all YOUR ducks are lined up. Then, invest in a voice recorder, keep it on all the time *=(you can rewind it and start again if nothing happens)- time date anything that does happen. You and your coworkers need to each come up with an annoying habit of your own- one of you can develop Tourrets, one can cough constantly- I developed a head twitch that drove my ex "boss" crazy.
