It is a SUMMER JOB, not a CAREER, you idiot!

Just got back from my niece's graduation party. She lives in a small town, about an hour from the metropolitan area, and is planning to go to college in the fall. She told me how she went to the corner strip mall in her town, to interview for a summer job as a sales clerk/cashier. After looking at her resume which lists her college plans and long term career goals, the idiot of a store manager tells her, "It does not look like this job is a good fit for you...you are not planning to take the RETAIL PATH." HUH??? My niece got out of there, and went down the road to Target. It will be a bit longer of a commute, but well worth it in terms of avoiding "career burn-out" from the "Retail Path". Unbelievable.

That happened to my husband when he was 15 and applying for a grocery store job. The manager was like, "You've NEVER held a full-time job before? Sheeeeezzz...." He asked her why in that case she was hiring 14-year-olds who couldn't have legally worked full time before, and she had no answer. Don't fool yourself though--the job market today is so ridiculously competitive that you almost need to prove career ambitions for everything. For Blockbuster, you have to prove that you love movies and want to grow within their company. For bartending, you have to compete with other applicants and prove that you can make all the fancy-schmancy drinks nobody ever orders. It's getting excessive.

I guess the store manager doesn't realize that not everybody wants to be in a dead end job reconciling receipts and re-arranging inventory for the rest of their lives.

Ahhh yes. The ever popular Retail Path... Why the heck did he even call her in for an interview? Sounds like the guy needed feel better about himself by putting down a college kid.

It could have taught her to become a better liar. "Yes, it is my lifelong dream to work here" and "uh... something came up, sorry I am leaving".

Sounds like this manager is taking the summer help hiring a little too seriously. Granted if they were looking for a permanent hire, they have every right to look for those qualities. However in this case it was a bit of overkill.
