I need to vent, then I will feel better. I have been working for an Ivy league university for 5 years. When I first started, my boss told me about everyone in the lab before I actually met them face to face. He was critical of a few people and told me that person A was stupid and could only be given repetitive tasks and nothing else. He went on and told me individual B was crazy and mean. Individual B actually knew of the boss's dislike for her and because I was new, I kept my mouth shut and did my job. I never had a problem with either person A or B, and if I did I worked it out with said persons. Both individuals have now left the lab for greater opportunities. The boss likes to have a target scape goat to blame stupid things that fly out of his mouth on. Since both of his targets left, I am now the target. It started slowly but now it is clear he has targeted me to be the scape goat. I am tempted to start looking for another job. I knew he liked to talk very negatively about people behind their backs and always felt bad for the target, but I never repeated the bad things he would say about a person or student. He does not like me because I will not sink to his level.(I dont like to gossip or need talk smack!) I am not an expert but I think my boss is possibly a sociopath. He fits all of the criteria. He actually physically makes me scared of him, he is really intimidating. I am afraid he might hit me in a fit of rage because he did not get his way. I am equally frightened of what I would do if he did! I might lose control and kick him in the nads. Thank you for listening. I feel better that I vented. I should offer that my boss is not totally evil. He is a very intelligent man, I think he has let a little of his power get to his head. He needs to be humbled a little.

This sounds so similar, the exact same thing is happening to me. These people NEVER get better, they always get worse. Document whatever you can. The problem is not you, it is him. I can see you are a good person, and you are trying to give him the benefit of the doubt. Don't be fooled. Cover your a--.

I know exactly how you feel. I had a horrible boss at a call center where i worked. She was always picking on me & putting bad write-ups in my file. Since I was young, I put up with it. It pretty much ruined my chances of moving up in the company, even after I'd moved to another supervisor. I moved on & am doing MUCH BETTER elsewhere. Sometimes the stress just isn't worth it.

Go to bullyonline.org for more. Your boss is a sociopathic serial bully. Let me guess-once his previous targets left, he was on your case within 2-14 days. His behavior indicates he is afraid of his own incompetency. Document, visit the above website for more information, AND LOOK FOR A NEW JOB!! The fact his behavior has been previously accepted by senior management means they are scared of him too. Good luck!!

Sounds sociopathic to me. Which, as you probably knows, means he doesn't feel remorse. So being humbled is probaby not gonna help. It's rough to work under a boss who has turned on you or starts to have it out for you. What are your plans? Are you going to start looking? Sounds like you may want to start thinking about it. Maybe you stayed on good terms with the other 2 people and they can help you get a job where they went?
