Boss asked me if I had a mental disease

My old boss and her two employees/cronies made up the whole of this one office where I did a student internship. Very small agency for counseling little kids.We each had our own clients, but would work in pairs for the group time.

One of the cronies was extremely nasty. One was nice. But both would always think that they instructed me to do things, when they didn't. For instance, Nice told me to put together a goodbye party for a kid (the kids were seen in groups so we had group parties when they left). She specifically told me to go to the dollar store and get "balloons, some noisemakers, and a couple bags of candy." Sent me off with $10 and told me not to spend more. So I did, and the party was a hoot.

The next day, I got called to the boss's office and Ms Nice was there. They said, "We called you in here because we're concerned about your engagement with the children." Nice said, "I told you to plan a party for this child, and you brought balloons, toys, and candy. That's not a party. I mean, come on. Would you consider that a party?"

When I pointed out that she was the one who had told me to get those things, and not "break the budget" by getting much more, she said, "Well yes, but you're supposed to figure out the rest. Common sense, come on girl!"

Yes. It's common sense that when someone gives me $10 and says not to go above it, that I shoult "think" to go above and beyond it. Right.

Weeks later, Nasty has a kid leaving, and we are planning a party for him. I offer to help her plan it by buying some things the night before; she says not to worry about it, she has it under control.

The next day, I went up to Nasty and asked if she was ready for the party. She said, "Party? Where are the children? You were supposed to tell them and go pick them up! I TOLD YOU FIVE TIMES! You're AN IDIOT and a moron! you always forget everything. You don't know Jack Sh1T about anything! F You!"

Again, got called into the boss's office. The boss says, and I kid you not: "I'm giong to ask you something very private. Do you have a disability of some sort?"

Me: Huh?

Her: You know, uh, something to do with memory, or your psychiatric state, or something? Because every time we give you instructions, you forget things! Ms. Nice tells you to plan a party, and you get the wrong things. Ms. Nasty gives you plain instructions and you forget that too!

I told her that they had NEVER told me anything of the sort, and the boss gave me this, "Heah right" look and said, "See what I mean?"

She then proceeded to go off on all the other "issues with me" that have come up in the last year. One is the fact that when I plan time off, I always "forget" to remind Nasty and Nice in the days before. I told her that my off time was in the calendar and that I remind them a week in advance (for group planning purposes). I felt that was notice enough, since we all check it.

She says, "Well last time you were out, they didn't realize it and they were looking all over for you! Oh well, maybe they forgot to check."

Right. So when they forget, it's fine, and when I do, it's a "mental disorder." Blech!

I did confront Nasty, but then got in trouble with the boss for that too, for being "unprofessional." Go figure. Amazingly, they let me finish out the internship (this happened in my last month), and I've never called them since.

You know...this is just ridiculous. Reading your other comments/posts you sound like a very intelligent normal person. Glad to hear you got outta there. Sometimes I run into people liek this too---you don't fit in with them because they're not "thinkers" (or something) and you are and then they try to make you feel like you're the one who's nuts because you are different than them so there must be something wrong with YOU. Anyway sorry you had to put up with that crap. Happy to hear you rose above it.

Thanks CorpSlave. I do have another story posted from my human service days. I hate to sound like The Victim, but those days did suck. thanks for the support!

Aside from the fact that they were creating what seems to be a VERY hostile working environment for you, the questioning about a disability was out of line. If the director truly thought such were the case, she could have offered to pay for an exam and should have given you information about the ADA. I'm sorry for the abuse you suffered.
