i work as an administrative assistant, working with reports in the admissions department of a college. the person who is the admissions coordinator got promoted to an admissions advisor, so there was an opening for her job. my boss sent an email out to the whole company saying the position was open, if anyone was interested in applying for it. i told her i was interested, and she said she'd talk to me about the job. well, as it turns out, she "interviewed" me for the position about a week later, and they had already hired someone. me and two other people applied for the job. the person they hired for the job has never spent one day in the admissions dept. they have always worked in the academic dept. of the college. i have been in the admissions dept the whole 5 years i have worked here. i never found out why the other person that applied for the job didn't get the position, but my boss told me that the person from the academic dept was "a better fit" for the position. my boss said to me, and i quote, "i'm afraid you couldn't handle the stress of the job because of what you're going through." i was diagnosed with breast cancer in may 2004 and had a mastectomy and chemotherapy and radiation treatments from june 2004 to december 2005. my last cancer treatment was december 14, 2005. i do not have any more medical procedures or cancer treatments that i have to receive, and haven't had to get any, since december 2005. she made it sound like i was still going through breast cancer and/or still receiving treatment when she said to me "i'm afraid you couldn't handle the stress of the job because of what you're going through." i am a 35 year old woman, and i have survived breast cancer and rape, i don't think i need to have my hand held or to be "protected." i guess my boss was trying to "protect" me from any stress a new job might cause, but i think if i can survive rape and cancer, i could handle a new job and whatever comes with it!
i used to think my boss was cool, i used to trust her, but after she denied me a promotion because i HAD (past tense) breast cancer, i felt betrayed by her. i don't need to have my hand held by anyone!

DISCRIMINATION. If anything, the situations you've gone through have made you stronger. The other person was probably one of her "friends", if you know what I mean.

What a rotten thing to do to you ! Nowdays it seems to be the norm, if the slaves don't like the treatment they are receiving they can quit. In your case, you probably have good medical benefits working at the college, you may have to stay just for that reason. Good luck, hang in there kid !

Unfortunately the situation you describe (Discounting your cancer and your rape) is normal. Too often superiors at a company get an opinion of subordinates and can't see those subordinates "sharing the golden management seat" with them. Her condescending comment to you about stress was demeaning. Here is another way to think about it, what if you had come from ANOTHER area with the skills that you had and mentioned to her during the interview that you had fought cancer and won...and also came to terms with a terrible attack. I bet you a years salary she would have hired you! Unfortunately, there is not much you can do except look for another job as this person has already made up her tiny hard-wired mind about you. I would get another job, and then sit down and tell her YOU were disappointed in HER and that's why you are leaving.
