This happened several years after tech school. They had given us a list of illegal questions for intervews that I had recently gone over, so were fresh in my mind. A VP at some firm called & was going through the usual inqueries when he asked if I was married. My style is not to mince words, so I said "under the rules, you're not allowed to ask me that." Without missing a beat, he says "can you come in for an interview?", which seemed odd. I should have smelled a rat, but instead agreed to drive a short distance.
Once in his office, he went on about various stuff they did, without asking me re: job experience or etc. I then asked if there was a job offer, he says no. I said thanks for wasting my time pal, then left. The kicker was now it was around 5 p.m. so I got stuck in commute traffic.

I went in for an interview, which took up most of the afternoon as I was shuttled from HR to this boss to that boss...when I finally got to the Head Cheese, he was told by his secretary right in front of me that the person they offered the job to yesterday accepted.... Why didn't they have the decency to say, "hey, don't come in today, we offered it to someone else, if they don't accept you can interview." But no...that would be too Human of them.

Labtech--Not only do they not have that decency, but it also bugs me how we are supposed to assume that "no news is bad news" rather than them having the decency to send rejection letters. Finding a job has become a lot like dating--if they call, they're interested; if not, assume they're not, but don't call them. Also what happens a lot of times is that they won't tell you that the offer has been granted to someone else, and will interview you anyway. Then just never call you. Ew.

To collect bi-weekly unemployment payments we are required to seek at least three job opportunities a week and leave applications. All the businesses that treated me poorly and arrogant are not patronized again. Some are gone. They don't realize that todays jobseeker is tomorrows customer. Several years later some are out of business. The doors swing both ways every day.

Excellent, C--! We all need to remember the law of Karma, or reciprocity, or however you want to phrase it. What goes around comes around.

I drove in a snow storm once to a job interview at IBM. They went through all the motions. It took me four hours to get home (< 20 miles and normally a 30 minute drive) and on the evening news, IBM is announcing layoffs and a hiring freeze. I get a rejection letter in the mail dated the same day as my interview. Thanks for nothing.

This happens when a company already has someone internal in mind for a job but has to "go through the motions". Many years ago I applied for a tech position at a new bank opening up. I received a call telling me I needed to come in TOMMORROW. I left work early and had my suit dry cleaned, ran around and bought a new shirt and shoes and drove to the bank the next day for the interview. Moving boxes were EVERYWHERE and the person I was supposed to interview wasn't there! So they handed me off to a junior person who stumbled through the interview for 10 minutes and then dismissed me. I didn't get the job and was mad at the time wasted but not upset I did not get the job...
New York Disappointment (03/30/2006)
I had an interview scheduled in NY, so I flew from Milwaukee to NY, and when I arrived nobody was even there to interview me. I sued them for the airfare - and they did indeed pay before I even contacted my attorney.
