Change your vacation just because I say so

I am so pissed off!!

I have had a vacation scheduled to Italy for 6 months. Everybody in my work group knew about it. It is a two week trip this coming September that has been completely paid for. Now a new idiot man of a boss started at the company and took over charge of our group. He is from India and decided he is going home to visit his family for a month during the exact same time that my vacation is booked. He hasn't even booked his trip (I know because he said so) and now he is telling me that I have to cancel mine! I objected and told him how long I have had this trip planned and explained that I was going with friends who already scheduled time off at their respective work places. Then I argued that he hasn't even booked his yet and he gave me a song and dance about how we need "full coverage" and a "manager's vacation comes first". This is such a stupid nonsensical reason because no one else has vacation scheduled then. So I pointed out that the rest of the team will be there and that my trip is non-refundable and suggested that maybe he could go two weeks later so that ours do not overlap. He then looked me straight in the eye and said "it is a fact that you will have to work around your manager's scheduled time off". I just sat there in shock with my mouth open. And then like he was addressing a little kid who was begging for a toy he said "No. And that is final." He said it like "FIE-NAHL"

I am going to go to his boss on Monday after I cool off a bit. This is just totally unacceptable. That skinny little bugger is not not NOT going to make me cancel or even reschedule a trip that I had dreamed of, planned out and paid for before I even crossed paths with him!

I am not going down! I am thinking I would rather quit this dumb job than miss out on my vacation. I don't like working for this guy at all. Idiot idiot idiot man!

This is outrageous. I guess I know we are all supposed to act like little rats, running around inside our cages, while our masters see how quickly and effectively we find the treats. OK, whatever. But now, you are supposed to gice up the one small piece of enjoyment in life that you have planned, waited and saved for, because THIS piss-ant decided that YOU are just not as important as he is. B**lSh*t!!! Go over this idiot's head, and then go to the media if you have to. I am so sick of these jerks thinking that they have the right to take over and dictate everyone's life. I am waiting for the time when we all say "enough is enough!" Please, don't let him do this to you. You have the right to your share of happiness.

He thinks he has to make a strong entrance. Unfortunately at your expense since yours was the first request. Write E-mail or memo, if he still won't budge discuss it further. After all your vacation was approved by your previous boss.-- If you win this one you may have to keep your resume handy. There may be hell to pay when you get back. I experienced that a few years ago. That type of boss does not like to lose.

If you quit, write up an email explaining why and send it to the entire company!

C-- is right, unfortunately. This type of personality is under the impression that the title "manager" makes him the next thing to God. He is challenging you purposely, and if you do not knuckle under, he will always be looking for the next chance to "put you in your place." If you DO knuckle under, it will not be appreciated, it will simply continue to be expected. Why companies continue to hire and promote these clowns amazes me. It is a guarantee that there will be a future of disgruntled, non-productive employees with a constant turnover.

Ok, this exact thing happened to me years ago. When plans had been made to travel for my brothers wedding. I was expected to miss it and show up for work. I tried working around them. Said I'd be sure all my work was done ahead of time...no good. So I said I wouldn't go and that I had cancelled my plans. However, instead...I found another job...went to my brother's wedding in San Francisco and never even bothered to tell em I wasn't coming in. They were short staffed that week, and I didn't complete all the work before I left. I never felt better about anything in my entire life. To he!! with them. Sometimes one has to take a STAND! Hell No... I'm gonna Go... Lemme here ya now...

I agree with everyone. Hey Loves to Run, that is a great story! ROCK ON! That's awesome that you stuck up for yourself like that. How anyone could ask you to miss your brother's wedding is beyond me. Good for you! And "Samantha", please let us know what the resolution to this is.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate it. I have an appointment tomorrow with his boss to explain the situation and plead my case. I really hate these sort of meetings but I am cooled off and prepared to go in there and stand my ground. Fortunately, my trip is in September and I have enough time to get my resume out there if I have to (might not be a bad idea in any case). I'll come back and let you know how it went. Thanks again. - Peace.

this happened to me too. I ended up having to shorten my vacation by 2 days. Looking back, it caused me such a headache that I wished I would've fought more for it. Good for you for fighting back. Wish I would have. Good luck!

I used to be a travel agent and heard this happen many times. If you used a travel agent, ask them to price your airline ticket as if you were just booking it today. Tell them you want to price a FULL priced fare, not a discounted one (if that's what you got), and then find out what the change fee is on your current ticket. Have the agent print the new price, with the change fee on it and then hand it to HIS manager. Explain that under this company's previous manager, you were given the o.k. and issued your ticket accordingly. If they want you to change your plans because of new management, then they can pick up the cost of doing so. This is not just a matter of inconvenience, it's a cost issue to you. I've had clients threaten to gets lawyers over nonsense like this.

I had to take off because my mother was ill, she had to be put on dialysis. My boss got mad because it was in the middle of a big sale and she had to change the schedule. To this day she has not asked me how my mother is!!!

I kept trying to see what your gender was and saw that you are a female. As someone whos deals regularly with Indians, and Pakistanis. And not all but many will just absolutely overrun females, and men if they think they can, if they feel they can. Women in their culture are expected to be very very submissive. How I deal with them is to be very firm don not under any circumstances make this man feel that you are intimidated. State your position firmly and strongly and let him know that it was approved previously and that you will go to what ever level you need to do to make sure you don not lose your money. He won't like it but once he understands that you will not your relationship may get better. This may sound easier said then done but I believe you will be surprised at how he will back off.

Samantha(04/03/2006)
YAY! I won! After days of going back and forth on this issue, explaining myself over and over again to HR and to my boss's boss I feel like I've beat it to death. I had to bring in all my confirmations to prove I was going and that I had paid for it, etc. My boss couldn't bring anything in because he hadn't booked yet. So they asked him to change it and he refused. So finally, to apease us all, my boss's boss just said that we will train one of the other people on my team to know everything that I know that could go wrong during the time I am gone. I said fine. I have been getting the cold shoulder from my boss ever since. So I don't want to stay here and have already gotten my resume together. I already have a really promising job lead from a friend. I will MAKE SURE I tell them in the interview process about my trip. Anyway if I leave I will try to train someone as little as possible!! So moral of the story? DON'T BE MEAN TO YOUR EMPLOYEES BECAUSE THEY WILL LEAVE! Thanks for your ideas and support guys!

SouthenProgrammer(04/04/2006)
Unbelieveable, they (I presume you mean HR) tell your boss to change his UNBOOKED vacation and he refused yet he raised a fuss because you would not change your BOOKED vacation. This is a sure sign of a personal vendetta on his part and a forewarning of the type of boss he is. Good luck on the new job lead...

Corporate Ladder Rung: CIODharmadee(04/04/2006)
Absolutely-the "cold shoulder" treatment is your sign that you made the boss look bad. He will never forgive you, because in HIS (tiny) mnd, you are not a "team player". Sickening, I know. Pack mentality to the extreme. You are better than that. Their loss - good luck in your great new job!
