My New Year's resolution is to get a NEW JOB. I was suposed to have vacation around christmas (scheduled months ahead of time) and my boss changed things up, said he needed me to be here and vetoed my vacation days! Then I had to come in on New Year's Day (observed on the 2nd - a PAID holiday) when he called me at 8 am in the morning and asked if I could be in by 8:30 because he wanted to get "some mailings out". Are you kidding me? Every time I had to cancel vacation time or go in at the last minute it was for nothing! I clearly did not "need" to be there. It was all for things that could have waited and on many occasions, I sat at my desk bored out of my freakin skull thinking about what I had PLANNED on doing that day. I do not get paid a lot of money and I have kids at home that I could have spent time with. Last night I decided that it's just NOT WORTH IT. So tonight, I start on my resume! See ya, boss from hell!

Another alternative you may want to consider is to stop saying YES every time your boss jumps. People will treat you how you let them treat you. If you stand up and say no a few times, he/she will realize they can't always take advantage of you. Then they will probably call some other poor sap to come in. Good luck in any event!

If you don't want to say NO outright there are numerous other excuses you can use. Only your imagination sets the limits. You can start by saying you are not feeling well to you were kidnapped by aliens./ Well, you get the idea. Time with your kids is too important to miss. Kids treasure the memories and so will you - unless you don't have any to treasure because you spent a life-time in the office. An updated resume is a great idea any time. does that really work as a laxative?? I might have to try it. I agree with Dryfus, it is all about how you teach people to treat you. They learn that you will do something or that you won't. And he's right, if you won't do it, they'll find someone else who will and in your case, that's a good thing!
