Thought I would share my outsourcing experience since it seems to be a growing and somewhat cowardly trend of society. Today, I reported for work to my new "client" having served the last five years somewhere else. So, I get here at 9, walk to the security desk give my name. They have me in the database. They ask who I am there for. I give them the two contact names I was given and low and behold they don't have them anywhere. So, they ask for my manager's name. I tell them...but I also say that he doesn't work on site here. They look him up anyway and tell me "he doesn't work here, do you know anyone else, like who you're matrix manager is?" First off, I have no clue who or what a matrix manager is, so I reiterate that these two names are the only two I was given. They tell me they are going to call "bob" and to have a seat. So, I do...ten minutes later, despite being the only one in the waiting area, they call my name over the loudspeakers. I walk back and mysteriously they have found one of the two people I had mentioned and that they were coming down to get me. And that's when the fun REALLY started.
After introducing themselves and staring at me for a few minutes one turns to the other and says "should we give him the tour?"...to which the other responds..."whatever you want". then they ask me...no, I don't want to know where I'm going...DUH! So, we walk around the complex, I'm feeling very much like I'm in a mall. Where the one guy my "boss" tells me not to expect to see him much, that this is rare for him given that he's always in meetings. So I get to my desk...no PC. Get told there's your monitor, your hard drive, keyboard, mouse..etc...all still in the box...go ahead and set it up. Not that I can't do that...but...so I finally get that done...nothing quite like setting up a PC in a shirt and tie...
Anyway, finally get that done...after spending a 1/2 hour searching for a network cable. Go to logon my notes...not set up...three calls to the help desk and that's finally up and running... All this to surf the web all day mind you.
So, I finally ask where do I bill time...get bounced around all day...finally get a number only to have it be invalid.
Oh the joys of outsourcing...the moral of the story...well, that'll be my next post...till then I am...
