This is probably something I should have posted the other week.
Right after I decided not to move to the new job that was offered to me my wife had a health setback that was pretty scary. The next day (Friday) I sent an email to my department that I needed to work from home remotely.
My boss (of 8 months) contacted me at home by phone to check on me, not check to see if I was working...he was genuinely concerned about me and told me he understood family issues (his mom died when he was young) and he was going through a painful divorce that was not his fault nor his idea. He talked to me a while and said to just work from home when I needed to as family came first, he also complimented me on my work and said the level of service I was already giving remotely to distant customers was very good and he was getting good feedback from other managers.
So hats off to good bosses! This man certainly earned my loyalty through his kind words and my job hunt has been put on hold as I don't think I could find someone this understanding...

Amen. There are probably just as many good bosses out there as bad ones. We just don't hear about the good ones as much, since it is more fun (convenient) to poke fun at the bad ones.

You are correct, I can honestly say I have had four outstanding bosses in my career. Three at my current company where I have been for over nine months. Oddly enough, the only ones that seem to REALLY climb up the ladder are the jerks. It is rare to see a truly nice person climb....

Had at least 15 bosses, counting some of the managers bosses, because they supervised on certain days. 7 were extremely uncaring but manipulative.Of the 7 only one was promoted, one moved up and down. Only -2- were exceptionally humane and nice without ulterior motives. Of the 2 one quit, one is moving up slowly. The rest stayed put. Draw your conclusions.

I only had one truly good boss in my whole work career. He couldn't stand any of this cutthroat stuff and ran his company strictly on respect, goodwill and caring. There was no cutthroat business going on and things were handled fairly and equitably. He was an extremely rare and good man to work for. Most bosses and others climbing the ladder that were referred to as "jerks" are sociopaths. There are more of these types of personalties than most people realize. They are the truly cold and uncaring individuals who have no conscience. There are too many of these types in the business world. In some respects, they can make for good business people, but when it comes to being human, they lack the ability.

I had a nice boss a while back. He was 20 years older than me, divorced and had 4 college students living with him in his house as roommates. He rode a Harley and had a great sense of humor. His ownly fault; getting on my case when I was late to work which was constantly because I dreaded getting up in the morning and would always race to get ready and would never be there on time. However, when I arrived unlike the other people, I didn't stand around talking, I got right to work and didn't leave exactly at 5:30pm like the others. Just got on my nerves that he focussed on my attendance rather than the total time there. Any of you have opinions about punctuality versus slacking off all day?

Good/cool bosses are so hard to find.... I used to have a really cool boss, but I couldn't stay at his office because he couldn't offer me the pay or hours I needed to make ends meet. It's a shame, really...

I had a good boss...he was forced to leave the firm. He is a mimister now. Decent bosses don't last long in the corporate environment.
