I work in a small off site office. In the last three years, we have been only younger women in this particular office. Recently, a man in his mid 40s began working here. Our boss, located in another city, called. The new guy answered the telephone, and our boss stated: "Why are you answering the telephone? Men don't answer telephones. That's a woman's job." The new guy was mortified and stated he has no problem answering the phone. The boss now prohibts him from answering the phone. UHMMMMM, hello?? Correct me if I am wrong, but can a man not pick up the phone just as easily as a woman? now what....

Things to do: #1:Call the boss back on his personal line and see if he answers the phone. #2:Tell the new guy he just entered paradise! He will never have to answer a call on the telephone nor will he need a cellular phone! #3: Have the new guy tell the boss he needs a secretary to answer the phone based on his asinine logic...

Some women don't answer the telephone -- especially, those of us who have had bad harrassment experiences with them. A man should answer my phone ;)

The one answering the phone is more informed as to what is going on in the office. This is better then office grape vine or clueless gossip. If something is really going on upstairs, phones start ringing off the hook, bosse's wife is angry, his lovely offspring is in trouble, he has a girlfriend, the bank or his lawyer are calling him. You can gadge his/her mood. / Of course, it is a nuisance when you have to drop what you are doing to answer the phone all day long.

Document that example of gender discrimnation. And don't anybody answer the phone! Let it ring, let it ring, let it ring. Unless answering the phone is in your job description. [I claim immunity if you get in trouble for following my ideas. Remember, I'm venting.] I noticed the young men in my office never answered the phone, so I stopped answering it too. Ladies, the same thing happens with opening the mail and checking the email and fax machine. And picking things up off the floor. Don't do things just because they need doing. Do things only if they will advance your status. If the boss decides someone needs to answer the phone, check the mail, etc., he needs to decide who it will be. And if he decides it should be the 45-year-old senior woman in the office instead of the 18-year-old male intern -- that's exactly what he did to me -- make him explain why. And look him right in the eye. And then I got transferred to an outlying office. It's documented, but a lot of good it's doing me!!!!

Truly sorry for your plight, Yesfan./ You were not "subservient" enough to men and I was not subservient enough to other women. It happens. The documentation may still come back to bite your male boss if he is a repeat offender.
