Having been insulted for the umpteenth time by phone solicitations from people that work in other countries for supposedly American companies, I am in need of some wisdom AND humor. Not very polite of me, but I have begun to ask, "Where are you located?" If there is an evasive response like our headquarters is in ____, I ask again. I have begun to steer some of our business decisions to more local sources because I am disgusted with the hardships in the local community caused by outsourcing. We have lost so many jobs in our region that honest hardworking people are struggling. It is heartbreaking.
Okay, my little protest may be worth nothing but my own sense of trying to do something. I would love to hear your suggestions on other strategies.
I have nothing against other countries developing stronger economies,in fact would see this as a positive. My problem is that some companies seem to be stomping all over the very people that made the profits from the early days. I don't want to support those efforts.
Some of you are pretty darn bright. What do you do to feel better about this unfortunate trend?

Look at Dell as the perfect example of a company that was forced to switch it's business tech support and bring it BACK onshore. Too many complaints. If we don't voice our opinion, things won't change. Unfortunately, Dell's private consumer call center support is still overseas.

Bringing jobs back onshore--this is what just happened with a company back home in Wisconsin. The foreign person was sending requests to Sauk Prairie instead of Sun Prairie (big difference); Fox Lake instead of Fox point, etc. Customers complained that they wanted someone who knows life locally. I say complain, complain, and boycott--ITA with the folks above.

ITA with all the comments above. Voting with your feet has always proven What's that old saying?? something like "standing mute while witnessing injustice is the same as committing it" ...I'm hung over after month end - hopefully you all get my drift...

Ohhh can I relate to this! America Online has ourtsourced it's Customer Service to India. They are making their millions on Americans in America not on Indians in India who probably work for next to nothing. I dropped em. AT&T does the same thing, but the Customer Service rep would not "admit" to being in India. She said that she was not permitted to divulge" that information. I dumped them too. I won't support any huge million dollar firm that outsources. I just won't! And before anyone thinks I'm a racist or whatever, please don't. I live in a multi-cultural household. Adopted kids from all over the world. It's just that I think its wrong for them to hire cheap help outside this country! Thanks

I do not think you should require yourself to "feel better" about something wrong. In honor of Rosa Parks today, I will equate it with the bus scenario. If you turn the other cheek and ask yourself to feel better about something that is wrong, you are seating yourself comfortably in the front of the bus and not looking back. I experienced outsourcing first hand and my family and friends do the same thing as you, they ask the "where are you" question. When the answer is evasive or offshore, they hang up and switch their service to another company. It is our duty to send a loud and clear message to these companies that the practice of offshoring your work while extinguishing American jobs is unacceptable. Good for you for being a thinker and wanting to do something!!!

You want a funny story? My husband and I were stranded on a major highway in a major city, so we did the first thing that came to mind. We called up Amoco Motor Club for help and were given a dispatcher from India who we couldn't understand and were trying for 1/2 hour to give her information on where we were located. She told the tow truck operator that we were on Highway 19 instead of 90, but thank goodness he figured out where we were. Needless to say, we have dropped that service and will rely on *999 from this point on.
