Double Standard Insecure Boss is a Living Nightmare

My boss' number one ambition in life is ensuring she is well-liked and popular (not by us worker-bees, but by her peers. The majority of her day is spent socializing and brown noseing. She expects us to do a song and dance or play "Hail to the Chief" everytime she walks by (and if we don't we get called in and reprimanded for being "moody" or "unapproachable". However, it is okay for her to ignore us. There is one person in our department who is just below her in rank, and unfortunately these two run around together. Her "friend" (also a woman), always gets the highest raise every year, and her "friend" is responsible for only about 3 hrs worth of work each day. While the rest of us (secretaries) are explected to take up the slack and doubletime it to get the work done.

The most pathetic part is that our bosses' boss could care less what goes on in the office and doesn't want to be bothered in any way shape or form. And there is no one higher in rank we can go to (and no HR dept).

Yes, we are looking for employment elsewhere, we are not doormats and will we tolerate her abuse.

How sad this world has become when employees with excellent work ethics who are not time wasters are not rewarded. Instead, they are punished by having more and more work dumped on them. Our boss never delegates, she dumps.

There are two of us in the "secretarial pool" and we are both over the age of 55, meaning the work ethics we practice were learned many years ago. Our boss and her cohort are in the 30-40 age range and their work ethics are less than nil.

The two of them will have closed door sessions several times a day, each lasting an hour or so. (um, one wonders what the heck is going on??)

And mgmt wonders why morale is low?

You're right...it sounds like there's a reason the door gets closed to me too... Perhaps someone should try knocking on it with an "urgent request"...or an impromptu fire drill! See what happens!

Had two bosses just like that and a second in charge who played along. As a matter of fact the first number 2 became one of my bosses down the line. She drove up in a large vehicle and numer 1 disappeared in the parked vehicle for a long time. A few minutes before that she was screaming at me because nothing went fast enough. After she came back she was almost friendly and relaxed. To her surprise I left as soon as work was done, even though it was raining and I was soaked and I shivered by the time I got home. When I came back to work the next day a nasty letter was in my inbox. If you did not greet them friendly enough, did not wear a smile all day and admired them you were due for a drugtest. Never put two and two together until later. Guilty parties attack for no reason.

I have been at two companies where management behavior toward employees over 35 was inexcusably rude. I think it is about replacing decently paid employees with cheaper ones right out of school. Going to HR or the higher-ups won't help if the directive to cut budgets is coming from them, and they condone this way of doing it. These people don't believe they have to follow the laws on age or race or gender discrimination or anything else, much less courtesy or professionalism. If I were you, I would document minutely every instance of the boss's unreasonable behavior (write it down with the date and time), and use a digital or tape recorder to document her words with you. Whether you let her know you are documenting is up to you. This evidence could help you get unemployment benefits if you are "fired for cause," if you can prove the "cause" was a false set-up. I believe this is the reason so many companies harass people into quitting -- to avoid paying unemployment benefits. In Hell, they will be treated as they have treated others.
