The cheerleader from hell

I have a weird problem. My boss is nice. TOO NICE. She is like a cheerleader on Red Bull whose bloomers are too tight. Every morning when I come in she says in a sing-song voice "Heeeeellooooo! Good morning and WELCOME to the day!" If I don't respond in a happy manner and just grumble good morning she drops what she's doing and comes over and berates me with things like "Awww what's the matter? The sun didn't rise on your house this morning?" or "OH come on now! You can do better than that! God gave us this day so let's ENJOY IT". I find myself forcing out a phony happy good morning to her every dang day just to avoid her sunshiny sh*t. Last month during my review she admonished me for being a "downer". Let me tell you I am by no means a downer, I am just not on sunshine steroids. I work at a company where we market health supplements and I am starting think to she is abusing some of them and taking our healthy happy life concepts to the extreme. I might snap one of these days I swear. I am getting REALLY REALLY tired of faking it at work! Maybe I just don't belong here but I was perfectly happy till she started on her "every single day is a perfect gift" kick and forced it down our throats. Anybody got a mask I could borrow that has a permanent smile on it so she gets the hell off my back?!?!?!?

Wow, do we work for the same company? I totally understand the agony of this one and I'd like to strap the woman at my office to her chair and spin her around a couple hundred times to spin the extra energy out of her. Working with her is like working with Richard Simmons on meth. Having someone's "happy" turned up to a 10 when everyone else is at a 5 is rough...especially in the morning and it's in your face. I just wish I knew what to tell you to do about it (so I can tell myself too). I like the cell phone idea, but I don't see how it's possible to do that on a daily basis...

If you all haven't seen the movie "Office Space," you must. And what is the name of that Jack Nicholson movie where the woman says something like, "We must open the curtains and let God's light in to cheer him up!" I won't give away what Jack says. Go watch it. Is it Five Easy Pieces?

The Jack Nicholson movie is "As Good As It Gets."

Here's the deal...the next morning you walk in and she does the "Rah-Rah Go Team" thing, do a back flip, the splits and then grab her Pom-Poms!

Here's a simple truth. Your boss is in fact a cheerleader -- that's a definite personality type -- and she probably was one in high school. You're going to have to humor her if you want to keep the harmony at work. She's trying to promote a positive, energetic and enthusiastic atmosphere. You have two options -- roll with the punches or just roll.

For fun, call her at 1AM in the morning for an 'emergency' to see if she is still happy at that hour. Other than that, whats the beef? I'd rather have a hyper-happy boss than a bear!

I know its hard not to get worked up, and you'd like to slip a little prozac in her happy-pills but I think the best way to approach the morning beam is to be professional, something like 'Good Morning *name*' should do the trick. Using someones name has meaning...thus giving you a chance to add conversation with only 3 words. The other alternative, which I think you'll prefer, is just fake a phone coversation on you cell until you reach your cube and the moment settles. I fake cell calls all the time - just make sure your cell doesn't actually ring during your mock-call.
