It just occured to me...

I just walked back to my desk from a meeting, and its a rainy Monday morning so I have to admit it was a lulled walk. Anyway, as I passed by all the cubes I couldn't help to notice that I couldn't pronounce any of the names. My name is pretty close to Jane Doe, very much easy on the American born tongue. It is amazing how many nationalities we have in this small 300 person office. On that topic, I was out with my son this weekend and he was easy to point out all of the nationalities that we saw during our short mall walk. I thought to myself Chinese, African, German, Indian, Russian, Polish, English, Irish, French, Turkish, Arab...and whatever the spoken language they may speak.... This is a America, Love it or Leave it! I think we should all be so pleased and honored that others want to be a part of this grand country.

Yeah, nice thought except for the people who are oh so happy to live here temporarily in order to train to take our jobs...which was the case where I worked. It was a revolving door...people from other countries coming in...Americans going out.

Those are two very different things you're talking about. Diversity is good, outsourcing bad. Specifically when you're outsourcing to another country and handing over your knowledge and your jobs to them. Not to mention the fact that you're now directly dependent on that country for your IT needs. Just wait till your job gets outsourced...then see how you feel when the REASON you work on a floor where you can't pronounce any of the names anymore is because they've arrived to train for your job.

Hey guys, sorry, I guess I put this in the wrong section of this site. I certainly didn't mean to offend anyone, nor did I intend to make light of outsourcing. The people I spoke of, around me, are just 'green card holders' who are making a living to pay bills just like me. They aren't part of an outsourcing initiative. To be honest, I was outsource to India a few years back so I know how painful that is! I put this in the wrong category, there should be a category for Pondering, because that is where this belongs. I think the people who sit next to me, with the difficult names, are hoping for a revived government here in the US as badly as I am. Again, my apologies.

I thought that might have been the case. I do agree with you, diversity is a good thing. I've learned a lot over the years from people from other cultures and countries. And I agree, there should be a pondering or thinking section. I have a few I'd like to share.

Hello JobSchmobbers. The "Career Ponderings" category has now been opened up for everyone to use. Good idea and thank you for the suggestion. When stories are added to this section, we'll create a link on the home page. Thanks!
