Don't talk to the customers or else!

I work at a cafeteria in an office building. I got written up at work because we have a new head guy that came in and he made it a new rule that none of us cannot talk to the customers. Well, this bascially screwed me because I talk to the customers all the time! I am the cashier that you go to pay when you get your food. The customers love to come to see me and I love to see them. So now I have to tell all of them that I can't talk to them anymore. I told my boss that the customers should decide if they want to talk to me or not because they are the ones that keep this place in business. I wouldn't have a job without them and he wouldn't have such a booming business if I wasn't so nice and frienldy to the customers. Well he didn't like that too much and just told me to "zip it or else". I think I like the "or else" because if this is how we are going to get treated then I don't want to be there. Who wants to work somewhere where you are looked upon as some sort of servant who can't talk to the "mr and mrs" of the house. What is this man afraid of? Maybe he's afraid we'll all open our mouths and everyone will see how much smarter we are than him. I'm an intelligent woman just trying to make some extra money for my family. Who does he think he is???!?!!

Piss poor customer service!!! don't worry your boss won't last long at that rate. People like to be in a friendly environment. Sounds like he's running a nazi camp rather than a cafeteria. Hang in there at that rate people will stop frequenting the store and business will slow then they will be looking for a new manager. just watch your back!! document everything.

I love talking to people in passing, isn't that what life is all about? Sharing smiles and laughs with each person we encounter? I love talking to 'the cashier' and all other service people I encounter, infact if they aren't friend it makes me want to shop elsewhere for my services. Sounds like your boss is a jerk and needs a refresh course in customer service. I'd say, stick it out to make extra bucks for the family - people like him tend to wash out eventually. Give it time...

The boss has no people skills. Move on to a place where people like you are valued.
