Being Fired

My boss would harass me on a daily basis. She was very critical of everything I did. She never gave me any encouragement and or support. Even when I did something right and or caught a mistake my underwriter made, I got into trouble. I knew I was going to get fired - it was just a matter of time.

The extremely sad part to me was that the HR Dept would not back me up on a lot of what happened. I would go tell HR how she was treating me and the fact that other employees would overhear how she talked to me (often hateful and sarcastic). HR would go with me to talk to her and of course she denied it all.

With her being so critical, of course I made some mistakes. Yet, I had no one to help me or to turn to. What can you do in that situation?

The day she fired me, I went back to my desk to pack up my stuff and of course she had to help me. She had the nerve to tell me she was sorry - I told her in a nice tone of voice that I knew she wasn't sorry for what she had done to me.

I don't know if I will ever get over being treated like that. And yet she is still there and being promoted. All I keep telling myself is that what goes around, comes around - that she will get hers one day.

They usually the way you view yourself is what you are or what you will become. I say start thinking like a "happy lady" (skip the "mad lady"). I am sorry you got treated this way. It is really wrong. Now it's time to pick your head up and do great. Take comfort in the fact that you will rise above it all and that, yes yes yes yes yes she will get hers in the end.

I agree with all the comments, and I recommend everybody keep a tape recorder, perhaps hidden, at your desk or in your purse or briefcase, and turn it on whenever this person approaches. Collect evidence. Someday it could be helpful collecting unemployment insurance or, if it's discrimination against women or other protected groups, or employees over a certain age, it might be useful in an EEOC process.

I had a similar thing happen. I was transferred to work for this evil woman because my boss left the company. She was rude and evasive to me the minute she met me. As far as she was concerned I was just a machine, there was no oral conversation on her part at all. If she wanted something, she would e-mail me. If I had needed to ask her a question and walk into her office, she gave me the look as if I was interrupting her. So I did the e-mail thing as well all the time thinking what's wrong with this b*tch! Now I did make a few mistakes, nothing severe, just a few typos and I corrected them. I was there everyday, didn't even take any vacation due me because I figured this was a temporary situation, they were in the process of replacing my former supervisor and I would return to my old job. I worked for this b*tch for 4 long months and somehow after she had no use for me, she started searching for a replacement for me. When performance appraisals came around, I was given a 2 which means needs improvement and then let go and told I wasn't eligible for rehire. I doubt my former supervisor who was supposed to provide input on me wasn't even contacted. Yes I'm glad to be away from her evil ways, but the company was a good company. I continued to apply for positions, but since I'm not internal anymore, my resume is in cyberspace. Yes corporate life sucks. Also this b*tch has an assistant before me who went out on stress leave. Now I know why. Prior to this assistant working for this b*tch, she has worked for another male supervisor for a number of years. The b*tch has only been with the company just past one year and is now on her third assistant. Makes you wonder?

ALERT! Do NOT believe that HR is there to help you. I was informed by an HR specialist, who trains HR agents throughout the coprporate world that the standard mentality in HR is that workers are "animals". Employees are referred to as "drones" or "cattle". PLEASE do not put your faith in any of them. They will report you IMEDIATELY to mangement and will not respect any confidential information you disclose to them. Confidentiality is for the employer, NOT YOU. PLEASE understand, they will use anything you say against you, do NOT TRUST THEM. That said, what is UP with these women managers? Do they all have to like this??? Petty, gossiping, nasty, jealous??? What is up with this?

Sorry to hear that, SadLady. I've definetly on board with you for the harassment and critical boss. I can't really remember the last time my boss gave me compliment, if ever. Yet she highlights my every mistake. It seems to be a prerequisite for being a manager. I too, am sad. But I've found comfort in the great web site www.successunlimited.co.uk Unfortuneatly, I have been in your position and mine several times before. No doubt you and I are both quite capable and probably very good at our jobs, we just need some TLC every once in a while (tell me I'm doing something right, for once!) There's nothing wrong with that. So chin up and you'll probably find a better boss next time around. As for me, I'm realizing if I get fired soon or if I decide to leave in the future, I am definetly going to have to be my own boss. I can't ever work for anyone else again in the corporate environment. I have absolutely had it with that kind of treatment, and I will never go back, unless I'm starving or homeless or something.
