Today my jerk of a boss told me to come in early tomorrow because he needs to talk to me about something. The last two times he did this it was to talk about how unhappy he was with his marriage. We are both men, so it't not like I am some woman whose shoulder he wants to cry on to make him feel like a man or something. Anyway the first time he did it I was shocked. I had actually foolishly believed he wanted to discuss a promotion I am after so I eaglerly went in early and dressed nicer. So for an hour before the rest of the employees got there he went on about how his wife makes him feel "smushed" as he puts it. He even disclosed some gory details involving him, some cousin and his wife that I wish I could get out of my brain. THE SECOND TIME, I thought it wouldn't happen again, that it was a fluke or something. Well no...duh...wrong again. At least I didn't dress up the next time. I just did a lot of "uh-huhs" and "oh reallys" the second time and tried to look disinterested. Well now here I am on the eve of what looks to be like the THIRD time. I am dreading it and don't know if I should tell him to stop, that I don't want to know or if I should tell him I can't help him or if I should come in regular time and say I forgot (I am leaning towards this one). Thing is, like I said, there's promotion that I really want and I need to go through him to get it (or rather he has to approve/recommend me). But I don't want to use him either and act like I care to get to this promotion. There has to be some happy medium and I really feel like I am stuck like a fat chick in a cheap dress on prom night - I don't wanna go out like this but it's lookin a lot like I have to.

Huh? I would never want to get ahead by kissing butt or using someone. It's not worth losing precious morning sleep over!

See I told you. It was exactly what he wanted. I DID go in early (probably against my better judgement) and HE did crap his life all over me for an hour. I pretty much stayed up all night tossing and turning trying to talk myself into going, then talking myself out of going till I made myself completely dillusional and thought a dog barking was my late father (but I digress)... ANYWAY I went and I got a Starbucks first and this, combined with the lack of sleep made me downright loopy. I came up with funny responses to his problems and made the old man chuckle a few times. He actualy lightened up in the end. I guess maybe he just needed somebody to vent to... I think I found some way to entertain myself at the same time that he's crapping his life on me. I guess it works in some bizarro way. Thanks for your responses, guys. This site is pretty cool.

good for you! I have mixed feelings about this one, but if you can find a way that works for you, more power to you. Perhaps a double shot of expresso is in order next time. =)~

Don't you see it? What is the easiest way to have your own needs met by others -- like, your needing this promotion? It's by taking care of their needs. Your boss is telling you that he needs you to be a friend, to bend your ear about his marriage problems. Telling him that you don't want to hear about his problems is a big mistake, and believe me, if you do want to go further in the company, you're going to have to play ball. Being there to hear his problems will keep the doors of communication open, and it should place you in a better position to ask for and to get that promotion. Chances are he isn't going to tell you "no" about the promotion after your coming in hours on different days early to help him with his marriage problems, listening to him and just plain being a friend (sincerely, though).
