I was laid off in early June and began pounding the pavements right away. Late in July I did a resume blast and got a call from a window sales and installing company. The owner told me his previous secretary/assistants had up and quit with no notice after 3 months on the job, only giving him an email to advise him that they were terminating their employment. Should have been my first clue. I went on the interview and while I thought the guy was a pompous windbag, he offered me a bucket load of money to help him put his company back on track. The day I started, he proceeded to tell me all about this wonderful woman who had been his first choice and how she'd decided to come on board, she knew everything, was a complete professional..yada yada, yada. She would start in 10 days, I would stay on at my current salary and assist her. I spent the next ten days hearing him tell everyone within listening range and on the phone as well, how wonderful M. was, how she was the only talent and integrity he needed, once she joined the company he would be able to take it to the next level. In the meantime, during these 10 days, he wouldn't let me do anything but answer phones and take the complaints from customers who had been waiting months for their window installations. He, of course, refused to speak to angry customers, waxed poetic on how he would talk to them if he had to and repeatedly told me how stupid, lazy or pesty his customers are.
Once M got there, and we developed a working relationship, he continued to praise her much valued presence and ignored me completely. This has continued regardless of what work I do, including spending hours of unpaid overtime on weekends and holidays getting his business back on track (M and I do this together), still even at meetings he makes a point of praising her and doesn't mention me at all. I'm tempted to tell him to get his head out his butt, but decided to stay on, earning a bucketful of cash until I find a better
position. M. tells me that I don't kiss his butt enough, but I think telling your boss he has a call, shouldn't require me to fawn or act the toady. Seems that this is a job requirement I wasn't advised of.
If I was a bad employee or unskilled I could understand the snub, if I was lazy or showed up late or didn't give a 110% effort to every thing I do for my paycheck I would expect to be fired, but M. now the General Manager has praised me constantly for my tireless effort and skill at handling everything from the customer service to inventory. When I leave I won't be advising him by email, I will be having an exit interview that will end with my telling him to get his head out of his butt.
Pray for me, the ego is a terrible thing to have to deal with. More terrible when the ego has neither charm, talent or skill to back it up.

I wouldn't let the bosses lack of praise get you down. As long as your feel appreciated by the others in the office, and you are making good cash, I would ignore Mr. Head in his butt. No matter where you go, there will always lurk a mr. Head in the butt.
