I teach in an elementary school. Our budget was recently defeated and as a result, we have had to adopt an austerity budget. This basically means that there is no money to purchase equipment, some supplies and apparently, state mandated inservice training. We were supposed to have trainers come in on our first day back to work but apparently, they will not be coming for whatever reason. SO.....the powers at be in the district decided it would be a great idea to "volunteer" some of the teaching staff to facilitate half day inservices. Do said administrators have the cajones to call us directly? Of course not! 3 days before school starts, I receive a letter in the mail informing me that I will be expected to lead this inservice and that an outline of what needs to be covered will be given to me a day or so before the start of school. I am expected to set up my classroom and get materials ready to teach children in my school on my own time. We haven't even received our classroom supplies for the new year yet because the orders had to be reviewed 3 times due to the budget cuts. I purchased $230.00 worth of supplies for my students out of my own pocket just to make sure they would have what they need. Now I have to put on a song and dance for a group of teachers who would all rather be in their own classrooms utilizing their time in a productive fasion rather than listen to me jabber on about something we've probably done a buzillion times before. AAAUUUUGGGGGHHHHHH!

That is fantastic that you take your teaching and students so seriously that you bought supplies out of your own pocket. I applaud your dedication. It is terrible that you have to deal with so much stress just to do a job you obviously love.

A lot of teachers buy supplies out of their own salaries. It's like working unpaid overtime. Administrators count on this. Imagine if they didn't get this volunteer support? They might have to come up with the money. Try calling your local newspaper anonymously and telling them about this. Maybe they will do an expose about the effects of the voters turning down school funding.
