Look over your shoulder, this month could be your last!!

As a manager of a car dealership in Wisconsin, I have an owner that is never satisfied. If I sell a lot of cars, my gross is too low, If I have a strong gross month, I am not selling enough units. My owner has a vocabulary much like that of a raunchy comedian. His use of four letter adjectives is his way of communicating. He threaten's me month in and month out with termination if I don't change one of the two listed areas I just mentioned. Our CSI is the highest in the region, and our customers love me. All my employees notice what I do, yet it is never good enough for him. Unfortunatley, he communicates with others owners in our business and has already expressed that if I leave, my career is over. I can't handle the stress of it anymore. It is causing problems with my family now and I don't know what to do. I know I am good at what I do, but all the job searching over the internet has yeilded nothing. I am feeling like I am in a cage to which he holds the key. Any suggestions?

Is moving a possibility? Also, you do not say if you are married...perhaps your wife can help out for awhile? Either way...start saving money now and cut back on expenses so you will feel more in control. Having saved and cut back will give you many more options and you won;t feel chained to his craziness.

lookyLu's right, don't take his word for it that he has blacklisted you to other owners. It could be a huge front to keep you under his thumb. I say put the word out that you're looking. Your sales should speak for themselves.

Go to bullyonline.org. Detailed info on how to diagnose and deal with a controlling, vindictive, and toxic boss or coworker. Helped me enormously! This behavior is rampant and is taking on the same significance as racial discrimination and sexual harrassment did in the past.

I know this feeling very well and yes, the stress of it can lead to family problems. The key is that you cannot let it take control of your life or blame him or your job situation for unhappiness or "spin-off" problems in your personal life. You are responsible for maintaining those areas over which you have control. That said, it sounds like you're kinda screwed where you are because of this man. If you live under his threats though, you will be giving in to his insanity and losing yourself. Nothing is worth that. You have to keep your chin up and start networking...it could very well be that when another dealership finds out you're looking to leave, they'll jump at the chance to have you and all his threats will mean nothing. Either way, youf life is yours to take control of, no matter what he says. Good luck, I wish you well!
