Boy, I don't think an office would exist without back-stabbing, gossip, butt-kissing co-workers and bosses who need to be on prozak! Before the insane office I am in now, I worked at a traffic engineering firm as the "all purpose assistant." Well, that is what I felt like since I had to answer the phones, assist the president, marketing director, accounting, HR, the controller, the engineers and the principals. Starting from the first day and continuing through the seven tormented months I was there, the president yelled and screamed at me about everything and anything and this was done in front of everyone. He was a spoiled rotten jerk who had never grown up. He deserved a big whooping, that is for sure. Strange, because I got a great three month review and was told that they hoped that I stay on. Oh, I forgot to mention that there had been six other people in this position before me in just under three years. What does that tell ya?! Well, right after the Fourth of July holiday last year, they told me that it wasn't working out and that they were letting me go. See, they didn't like the idea that I had asked them if they could possibly hire a part-time person to help with the phones so that I could have more time to do more computer work. Just after that, I got my current job and even though I do not get yelled at or ridiculed, I don't get any help whatsoever from my boss. I have been given a bunch of duties that I have never ever done before and have been able to figure out some of them, but I have been having a little trouble with one and can't get any answers out of her whatsoever. Also, the stupid president, luckily he is retiring soon (but soon could be a few years), thinks I don't have enough to do and keeps going over my boss's head to dump stupid idiot projects on me. I am always the one that gets stuck doing all the crap no one else wants to do. I got a great review from my boss earlier in the year and I should have considering I have straightened up big messes that she had caused and the agency could have been in a lot of trouble over those messes. I don't even know how the company has even existed since 1972. There is also so much back-stabbing, gossip and pettiness. It never ends. I wish I could retire and not put up with all, but I have almost 30 more years to go and even by then there probably won't even be social security to rely on. I don't get how companies can treat employees the way that they do. There has to be something that can be done. What a hopeless dreamer I am!

In the increasingly competitive global marketplace, companies like that will not survive. I worked for a company where the owner was a pervert, his asst. was abusive and delusional(as well as his lover),the sales mgr. was a thief, and two female sales reps.openly discussed their affairs with clients. My solution: a moving target is harder to hit. Get what YOU want out of the situation and then cooly leave. Please take this hard-won advice!

So what do you do to keep sane? I have a similar situation and I've kept quiet for the most part picking and choosing battles. I've sucked up the fact that there will always be gossip and back stabbing and even watched a newcomer fall in to the pattern w/in 3 weeks. Fortunately I am able to do most of my job independently but the office antics and noise can get to me when I need to concentrate. Advice on how you deal?
