You can't do that because I changed the handbook

I worked for small family owned company. The owner's daughter was in charge of the internet, h/r, and computers. Her favorite task was to change the employee handbook to screw over the employees. When she would discover that something in the handbook benefited other employees and not her, she would change the handbook. When people were approaching anniversary days for vacations she would change the handbook. She always went back to the acknowledgement that we signed that stated that we would accept all changes to the handbook.

She had one of my coworkers fired because the coworker filed a workers comp claim for carpal tunnel. The company had the insurance company turn down all of my coworkers claims. Well the owner's daughter got carpal tunnel and filed a claim with the insurance. She got her claim taken care of and we saw our workers comp and health insurance premiums sky rocket.

You're kidding me!! That has got to be illegal somehow. You know...there has got to be something we can do about these types...

Keacie(07/12/2005)
It is illegal. You may sign a document saying you are someone's slave, but it isn't legal. Small companies are often the most vicious to work in. Being someone's daughter or horny secretary does not a HR director make!

Corporate Ladder Rung: Mailroomgranularity(07/12/2005)
So if it is illegal, what can you do about it? I mean, does anyone know specifically what course of action Green Arrow could have taken? I ask because I am in a similar situation and feel like I am at the mercy of this person.

Keachie(07/13/2005)
Start quietly documenting everything that goes on. Note actions, when they occurred, who was present or knew about it, anything relevant. Keep these notes at home-they can and will be stolen out of your desk. Then contact the state atty. gen. office. They can advise you from there. Meanwhile, look for another job. These folks don't deserve you!

Thank you. I did start that once but I had it as a file on my computer at work that I can't find anymore. But maybe it was deleted on purpose now that I think about it. I will start keeping it at home. I had taken some time off for family medical leave (for complications due to a C-Section and then they changed the policy when I was in the middle of the leave and made me return. That was the biggest one but there are a few other things that this person has done to inconvenience me to say the least. I am a good employee who doesn't make waves and you're right, they don't deserve me. I am going to post my resume this weekend.
