A co-worker and I were interviewing for summer camp positions. It was the third year in a row we were responsible for interviewing to hire 30+ positions. For many of these people it was their first, or nearly first, job interview. As you can imagine, we met some very interesting people. Then there was Rob.
I went to get him from the waiting area to bring him to the interview room. I noticed that he was sucking on a peppermint candy rather loudly. Unprofessional, but we saw many inappropriate actions at these interviews. The interviewees were young and inexperienced so things like this were not that unusual. Rob was waiting to distinguish himself from the others.
The interview began with basic questions; it was difficult for him to talk because of the candy, so he spit it in his hand and held on to it! Then we asked him what his philosopy on discipline was. "Well," he said, "We probably shouldn't hit them." So basically, don't break the law when disciplining children in a daycare situation. At that point we knew we weren't hiring him.
We finished up the interview, and as we were saying good-bye, my co-worker held out her hand to shake his. He popped the candy back in his mouth, held out his sticky hand and shook hers. I avoided a handshake.
