Last Friday there was a production problem. No big deal, we see them from time to time. I had plans, but I know my obligation is to fix the problem. Well I fixed it by 7 so I started to shut down and pack up. My boss, let's call him "Harry D." sees me shutting down, comes barrelling out of his office and says, "Not so fast" and comes up and actually puts his hand on my should to sit me back down! I read somewhere that putting your hand on someone's shoulder like that is like some subliminal show of power and dominance...so it pissed me off. Anyway he sits me down and says "Look, I know it's fixed but we can't let this happen again so we should rewrite the update program". And I calmly say that I have plans, the system is stable and that I will do it first thing Monday morning. And he tells me that "no, you will fix it right now" and then we stared at each other for like a full minute as I saw my wife and kids and mortgage payment flash before my eyes. I made one last attempt at reasoning and told him that I would come in and fix it the next day (Saturday) because I had my kid's end of the year play to go to and I was already late. He's having family problems and has become a real pisser these days so I think the mention of kids set him off. He immediately got all red and called me by full name Randall (instead of Randy that I go by) and told me under no circumstance would I be leaving till I finished. Well, the dillweed got what he wanted because I fixed the problem. The bad news for him is that a) In my haste, I didn't fix it as well as I should have and it will break again and b) the next night I attended a wedding reception and met up with my old nice, happy boss who offered me a job. When I have my exit interview I am telling them exactly why I am leaving! Hopefully his little stunt will come back to bite him.
