Stay focused, ladies and gentleman, even though it won't matter

A few years back the company I was at merged with another one. I got laid off as a result of a giant lay-off due to the merger. I heard from some of the "survivors" that the day after the lay-offs, the new company president called a company-wide meeting to announce what happened and to say how "painful" it was. He went on to say that this was only the first round of layoffs and people should not expect such generous severance packages in the future and that they should "stay focused" (classic) and work hard in order to avoid being laid-off. How about that for motivation? Don't these guys get it?
