I was first out of college around the time it became acceptable to send your resume electronically. Since I really wasn't looking forward to buying all that heavy stock paper and going through the hassle of printing out envelopes just so I could use snail mail I decided to send my resume out via e-mail. I got a professional sounding e-mail address, followed all the resume tips and had 5 people proofread it. I drafted a nice cover letter and I even had my cousin who worked in HR look it all over before I sent it out. I was ready to go! I was so psyched and imagined that the minute I sent it out I was going to get a job. I was so cocky that I even took a vacation before I sent it out! I figured that it would be a long while before I had that chance again since I would be "working" right after I sent out my resume.
What an idiot I was.
The first day back from vacation I sent out my resume to 40 companies and sat back waiting for the phone to ring. Within a few hours about 30 of the e-mails got returned to me informing me that the attachment I sent out (my resume!) had been infected with a virus and that it had been 'quarantined'. How humiliating!! That was 40 companies that I could just cross off the list. I was so embarrassed I ended up sending my resume out in the next big city, 50 miles away and finally got a job there---6 months later.
