After my trade course in welding, I was off to working in Montreal's biggest mini-shops.
Teaches had told me how hard it was dealing with the stress. But I didn't think it would be that bad.
In this city, the companies hire you for contracts. When you call them, it's all: Lots of work here, bla bla bla.
You end up being kicked out after the rush. I've never worked more than 10 months at the same place.
Here's my story:
I meet the foreman; shaved head, agressive, mean.
I meet co-workers; agressive, unexperienced.
I meet the boss; couldn't care less of us.
I could deal with stress but it finally sneaked up on me.
One night (it was night shift), we're rushing on a job; some kid starts bossing me around, I start smiling and looking at him thinking "Say it like you mean it".
He gets mad and starts yelling with a high pitch voice. I started laughing at him. Then, he just walked away embarassed.
Nights after, the same guy talked to his friends at work.I ended up working against them, and not as a team.
Another night, this other guy was agressive with me. I got nervous. I made a mistake and almost hurt him. He told me that if we weren't at work, he'd wanna fight me. By then, every night going out of the shop, I'd watch my back.
Other things happened after. I'm still alive now.
When the contract finished, the night shift was all laid off. Was it worth it all.
