The post "Leave The AC On Already" made me remember a wonderful prank I did a few years ago. In case folks don't realize, IT is seen as a black hole where money is poured into and nothing is ever gained. Again the key word is SEEN as a black hole as without data a company could not run.
Given this, the entire IT division was given the directive to come up with methods to save money. We had a meeting and our boss showed us how one of the techs in the SouthWest had saved money by changing all of the laser printers to use 300 DPI instead of 600 DPI and he had come up with a cost saving figure of 15K since laser cartridges would last twice as long!
I immediately raised my hand and said that would not work since the settings of the printer setup in the workstations print manager would override those settings.
My manager (at the time) gave me a "Oh you just don't get it look" and instructed us to implement those changes and to come up with similar one.
I was sufficiently ticked off so I sat down and throughout the week came up with this glorious document detailing how we should turn on the power save feature on all of the printers because those printers sat around being idle. I came up with a huge PFA (Pulled From My...Air) figure showing a cost savings of ~ 25K if we set the power down time to 30 minutes.
My idea was accepted and implemented.
Stage ONE was complete...
A year later we were once again under the gun to come up with a cost savings. My old boss had moved up the chain and we had a brand new boss.
It was time to implement Stage TWO of my evil plan (insert evil laugh here)
I came up with a paper showing that workers were spending too much time waiting for printers to warm up. I charted how administrators and high priced managers were spending too much idle time. We needed to turn OFF the power save feature which used too much power to warm up the toners anyway!
