Just joined a firm with an original "Boss From Hell." The only thing good I can say about it is that she makes for great stories with my friends. I've even started a short story about her.
She is belittling; demeaning (even in front of clients); works 24/7 and expects everyone else to do the same; and my favorite, a "blamer" --- you know the type. Nothing is ever her fault, even thought she never allows herself enough time to review projects, but then balsts team members for "not allowing enough time." Yeah, right. Her Assistant is sick all the time because of the stress and her staff operate out of fear. One of the staff spends her work time bloggin about how miserable she is. And the sad thing is that the firm we work for is a GREAT place...except for her.
Well, outside of putting a voodoo spell on her (which I did), I think the wagons are circling. If there is any justice in the world, she will get broomed.
She has definitely underestimated me. When you are a nice, normal, experienced professional woman and you turn 40, something changes. You have a mid-life awakening. you suddenly realize that you don't have to take crap anymore. That is me. I might be blonde, but I'm really a brunette, so don't think I'm a bimbo. And don't think I won't take you down. I like to think of myself as a female "Equalizer" for the workplace. I think my "boss from hell" will be experiencing even more heat very soon.

Haha! So true. Something about turning 40 that makes your perspective on how much abuse to take turns into Zero Tolerance. Hope your spell works out. I've done a few. So far two down at former place of employment and five to go....

I am 40 and blonde--and a real blonde but not a bimbo(although that could be interesting as my place of employment is so boring). There is something that happens when you turn 40 as it goes with the workplace--you see that you can't be intimidated, can think fast on your feet, etc....You can "connect" the dots faster so you have the bully Boss' number faster. I call it "multi-dimensional thinking".

I love that Blue! Multi-Dimensional Thinking...

Honestly, I think at least part of it is that once you hit 40, you can raise the spectre of age discrimination claims. I'm not saying that you *would*, of course, but it's that they *think* you might, and *that* gives someone who is 40 a bit of extra leverage.
bigblue(04/25/2007)
Party girl--you said the company is great--is there anyway that you can switch within the company--even if it will take a while--can you start to make strides toward this?
Red-doing several things at once is multi-tasking ( mental and often physical simultaneously) so Multi-dimensional thinking is the emotional equivalent. Otherwise known as being ready with any comeback, excuse, explanation, lie, reason, logic, argument etc...that the Boss may throw at you--and when they can't get you on one thing--you pullout that multi-dimensional thinking--and ya gotta have it if you got a bad Boss.

Actually BF and I am only going based on my personal case. Yes. 40 is when you are covered under the ADEA, but I was told if it weren't for the fact my replacement was only 20 something this wouldn't (the ADEA)have really helped me. It really applies to 41 and over. I don't know the reasoning and didn't bother to look into it. As long as it would apply now under my circumstances is all I care about.
Blue. I know what multi-tasking is. Was referring to the multi-dimensional and how you expressed it....I simply liked it.

I am not over 40 yet(close), but I do believe that the over 40 generation has a better work ethic than some of the younger ones. With age comes experience, like wine, the flavor deepens and becomes more bold. Some anthropologists say this is because our society does not look at women over the age of 40 as a sexual being. What a load of crap!! I know more and more women who find their mojo over 40, then when they were 20. I think it is because of experience, by the time your 40, you are no longer as insecure or believe the line bull crap fed to you. It is true that Marketers no longer target the over forty crowd because they are too intelligent to be duped like the 20 something crowd. The 20 something generation swallows every load of crap fed to them. They are the most targeted market and we feed off of their insecurities. " Your feet smell? Well there is cream for that! You say your fat, well we have a pill for that! " You can fix anything with money! The over forty have been through this age and realized that even if your feet stink, someone will still love you! It is about self love. I love it when someone just out college starts a new job. Most of them are full plumed and ready to pounce, but find that experience really does account for something!
RedVelvetFlames(04/26/2007)
Woohoo Freedom. Then that means you are a Generation X'er! Yes. We rule lolol
Freedomringer(04/26/2007)
I guess if a Gen X'er was born in the early 70's, that makes me one big giant SLACKER! Yes then I am what I am and I have smelling feet and I am fat!! Yeah. I am not a stupid little girl anymore. I used to be so gullible! Life experiences have left me, not bitter, but much better; sweeter and deeper and I would not loose a single grey hair on my head for the loss of one of experiences. The good and the bad, it has made what I am and I can say that I am in a good place right now. I am never going to work with good people, by the nature of the beast they are what they are. Do you call a snake by any other name? However I am, as I age, becoming less intolerant of ignorant and immature behavior of supposedly adults that I work with.

Speaking as a Generation Zero member (includes Michael J. Fox and Obama), women over 40 very much have their mojo going- and are we are blessed to know them!!
RedVelvetFlames(04/26/2007)
AAaahhhh Confessor is a Baby Boomer Gener! And you go Freedom! I hear ya loud and clear. My feet are smelley too. I still wear my combat boots dating back to 1989. There comfortable and reminds me of the mosh pits ::::sigh::: Lawd, now I feel old lolol
what a long strange trip it's been(04/28/2007)
Too bad about all the horrible bosses out their. I too am over 40 and am having a difficult time with my new boss who is now condescending and rolling her eyes while I ask her questions politely. I guess this is normal but for me I am really having to hold back both my tongue and my fist. I want to tell her while she is rolling her eyes and telling me that it is "multi-tasking" that I seem to be having a problem with that I have previously been replaced by three individuals whenever I left my position
And, I have been holding my tongue so much that I am actually grinding my teeth so badly at night that I must wear a night guard when I go to sleep until today when my tooth actually broke in half. I hope to get some experience with this company then leave relatively soon and find a different job and a different boss. So, why is it that some bosses are such assholes? My boss suffers from OCD and is, aside from arrogant, a self-proclaimed anal retentive basket case. Should I just quit and leave her without a punching bag?
RedVelvetFlames(04/29/2007)
Strange Trip -- Confessor has written quite a few things regarding the a**hole boss. You should go through his archive and read the threads from the last couple of months. He also refers you to site's that explains this behavior. As for your situation I do not understand what experience you are seeking especially someone in our age group (unless you had a career change.) Not to say we do not learn something new up until the day we die, but as you can see by the other schmobbers writings who are in there 40's or close such nonsense is not tolerated. If you are unable to defend yourself then I personally suggest you quit.
the confessor(04/29/2007)
Thanks Red Velvet for the reference. Any yes, sites like Bullyonline.org and kickbully.com offer invaluable guidelines for understanding and dealing with antisocial personalities.
The key moment for me personally was the realization that the people who had gone after me were in fact social psychopaths that couldn't be reasoned or negotiated with. Since these people lie effortlessly, hearings or meetings are useless. One must point out tirelessly their abusive and destructive behaviors ("By acting in this manner, they undermine the ability of myself and others to do our work" , etc.)
The other key is accepting that some firms use these people to spy on, distract, and sometimes remove high-performing employees that might otherwise be able to ask for and recieve pay raises and promotion.

Wanted to add that one employer knew that the secretary was going through our trash looking for "incriminating" notes. When a co-worker let it be known that he was spitting into his trash, we came in one day to find her greeting us by waving....while wearing rubber gloves. If that isn't mentally ill, what is?
RedVelvetFlames(04/29/2007)
Your welcome Confessor. Been telling my friends about your site. You should write a book. Seriously. I thought I had some real psycho co-workers and bosses. That story of the secretary takes the cake of anything I have ever heard.
