I no longer want to answer the phone "the Company Way," which means :"Put a smile in your voice, never say no, never say there's nothing you can do, and never leave a customer without answers."
Why?
I'm tired of people treating me like the switchboard. I don't know WHERE you people get my number from, but I am the secretary for ONE department. ONE. I serve THAT department. that is it.
I don't know why John in Legal Department in City on the Other Coast isn't picking up his phone--THIS IS NOT THE LEGAL DEPARTMENT. I will happily look John's colleagues up in the directory as a personal favor, but please know that that is not my job.
No you can't pop on upstairs and apply for a job "with HR." HR is also located in another city, on another coast. You can apply online like everyone else.
I don't know who's the sales person you can talk to about your copier--CALL SALES. Quit calling checks processing for all your stupid little questions.
And to the jerk who keeps handing out OUR phone number as "general helpline," STOP IT. NOW.

My poor cube neighbor some how gets like 10 calls a day from folks looking for someone else. I don't know if her number is just similar to the general help line, or if folks just share her number since she actually answers and tries to help them... It is a bit comical.
Its appreciated (04/26/2007)
Well i know that the hum drum of constant ringing from that damn phone keeps you from getting your real job done but just a little thank you from one of the people calling you bugging the redirection does help thx

I agree, I have had people call the lab phone and ask for so an so at this dept. and I have to say that so and so, is in a different building across campus and I can not tell, so and so, you are calling or transfer your call. Then they ask me to look up the number of, so and so, and give it to them. First of all, I am not a secretary, I am a research assoc. which means I am in the middle of something and looking up a stupid phone number for you is not a part of my job description. I usually have my timer on me with an annoying alarm and set it to go off just as they start to ask me to transfer their call or look up, so and so's number. Strategic timing, I say, "Oops, there goes my timer, I am in the middle of a really delicate experiment that took months of planning. Bye." Click! I fell your pain. Everyone should respect others and not treat people answering phones like their personal assistants.

Experiencing both sides of the spectrum (the caller and receiver when I began as a receptionist/secretary) the calls described are certainly a nusance and sometimes those callers are not exactly polite if you do not have the information they are seeking. If I was very busy my response would be "I am very sorry sir/madam, but I do not have that information. Have a good day." However, 99% of the time I had no problem giving the information as long as the person was not rude or bossy (Then I'd hang up on them after saying the above noted.) On the caller side and I am sure this has happened to many. You call the number listed on whatever document, website, yellow/white pages, etc.... That person refers you to another department or person, and so on, and so on, and so on.... This is particularly the truth with City and Government employees. I can't stand them! They have got to be the laziest MOST INCOMPETENET people I have ever EVER come across in my entire life! So the next time you are wondering why you are receiving a particular call maybe it was a lazy and incompetent co-worker who passed the slack over to you. For those of you who work for the City or Government and before you have a heart attack I am referring to the SSA offices, Department for the Aging, Department of Motor Vehicle, and any other entity that is suppose to be there to help the general public.
