So I see that $4 a gallon gas is well upon it's way. To paraphrase Scott Adams "This makes me so mad I want to jump into my big SUV, drive to the Exxon headquarters and punch someone in the nose!"
As I read the article above, I had steam coming out from my ears when I read this part:
Americans are resigned to higher prices, says David Pursell, a principal with Pickering Energy Partners, a consulting firm in Houston.
``Last year, we had pump prices well over $3 for the summer and gasoline demand was up,'' Pursell said in an interview. ``Would $4 gasoline cause demand contraction? I think it will, but I also thought $3 gasoline would.''
I put this through my official Southern Programmer BS Dector (Patent Pending) and got this: "You are all screwed! the oil companies were surprised when you still bought gas at $3 a gallon so they figured they would try raising gas to $4 a gallon and see just how high their profits can climb!"
Gee, since the oil companies enjoyed a record 30 BILLION (plus) dollar PROFIT last year....I would guess they are probably making money!
How is the $4 a gallon gas going to affect you? In my case, it will affect the pocketboot and the raise I just received will go straight to my gas tank so I, in effect, just got a raise for the oil companies benefit!

Time to trade-in the SUV... I'm leaning towards a hybrid... anyone have a recommendation?

We are being manipulated again! In our neck of the desert, we need larger vehicles to stay safe and alive. How about alternate fuel?

Twiz - Hybrids are neat, the Prius appears to be the best. If I were buying a car I would look at any of the NEWER (not pre 2007) VW diesels as they get great mileage. Pre 2007 diesels have an issue with carboning up after 50K miles resulting in expensive visits to the mechanic. 2007's were re-designed and do not have this problem.

Thanks for the tip SouthernProgrammer! My brother actually has a diesel VW from a few years ago... I wonder if he is going to have this carbon built-up issue. Is there anything he can do to try and avoid this problem? He does get like 40+ miles to the gallon... which is great.

I don't have much faith in hybrids. They cost more and they are not as fuel efficient as the makers say they are. Go buy a 3-cyl econo-box. You'll get at least 40mpg.. but no respect on the road...

SP--I'm so glad you wrote this. My husband is always talking about this and I totally agree with what you have brought to attention and your take on this topic as well. They will push it and push it(price inflation) and people will keep taking it and taking it. People don't understand that there is such strength in numbers--things could change if people just said, "NO."

SP--I also like your tag line--"Your Boss won't remember your name in 20 years--your kids will." When people leave my job--not only does the Boss not remember their name after 20 minutes--forget 20 years--he doesn't even remember anything about you.
