The importance of knowing how to spell

Some years ago I was a manager of a woman's clothing store. A woman came in and filled out one of our employment applications. As I read her responses I noticed several misspelled words and grammatical errors, but the funniest one was her answer to the question "Why would you like to work at our store"? I'm sure what she wanted to write was "Because I like working with the public", but she wrote "Because I like working with the pubic".

Uhh... beleive it or not, I once ran a video store where a recruiter hired a woman who didn't seem to know what the alphabet was, though she otherwise acted and appeared normal. Bizarre!
