A former boss of mine was fond of getting his way with his superiors. I suppose you could call him a gate keeper because he would get his way by holding the software hostage (he was VP of engineering). He had the senior management team beleiving that he was the only one that could actually make the software work (talk about an ego).
One day, when the CEO had had about enough, this guy tendered his resignation in retaliation for a decision the CEO had made. When it got around the company that my boss had done this, I asked one of the other managers if it was true. The other manager told me that my boss hadn't actually meant to resign, but was trying to bully the CEO.
What a shock my boss got when, two weeks after receiving his resignation, the CEO called my boss into his office to explain his severence package and Cobra arrangements. When my boss started to protest - saying he hadn't quit, the CEO whipped out a copy of the resignation and put it under my boss' nose. In spite of my boss' protests, he was escorted out of the building shortly after this.
When my colleages and I recount the story, we always talk about the guy who accidently quit.
