Last year I was working as an intern over the summer at a large local corporation near my school. I was doing software development, working on a project that was due to wrap up by the end of the year. Well the fall came and went back to school and stayed on working part-time for the company in my free time. Things were going well up until the last few weeks of the project.
For a number of reasons, the project had fallen behind a few weeks. It was no longer going to make its end of the year scheduled completion. I went to my boss and informed him that I was going to be taking the week of final exams off from work to study and of course do well on my exams. Since the project was behind a few weeks, he felt I should not be taking any time off and wanted me to work OVERTIME during my finals week to get the project back on track. I reminded him that school was my number one priority, and that I am only an intern there. The job was not suppose to interfere with my academics per the relationship our school had with the company. Well this was unacceptable to him. He continued to sternly warn me that I'd better do whatever it takes to get the project done by the end of the year. He said he didn't care if I had to sleep less, eat less or study less. Well at this point I told him I didn't think that was possible with my exams and walked out.
The next day I stopped off at my school administration office that was responsible for working with companies regarding internship programs. I had a long conversation with the director regarding how I was treated and what I was being asked to do, particularly during my final exam week.
Well the university ended up contacting my bosses boss. Let's just say he was reminded that the relationship with the university was a priviledge not to be abused, and that any student working there is not to sacrifice their academics for any project.
When I returned to work AFTER my finals, he never said another word about it to me. After the project completed, I left (turning down a full-time job offer). Since then I've heard rumors that he was moved out of his current position (demoted). Not sure if it was related to this incident, but I think it was well deserved.
