Foster Care Supervisor

Foster care is stressful enough. But when you boss is bi-polar and refuses to take her medication it is just intolerable. The swings from depressed to manic take over the office and the casemanagers live in fear of her tirades. One time she broke her toe after kicking her own desk as she was mad at the district manager.

When are the powers that be going to realize that the reason they keep loosing casemanagers is due to this supervisor. She appears so faithful, loves to work long hours (because she has no life outside of the office), she love crisis in other peoples lives that fills the gaps of when she has not created a crisis in her own life.

She has two dogs who can not be house trained, her home should be condemed, yet she approves or disapproves foster homes.

Research shows that the helping professions like yours have the highest incidence of this behavior. These people are seething with anger that can only be assuaged by controlling and manipulating clients and those that have been hired to help them. Visit bullyonline.org. I worked as a foster home manager for two years-the crap I witnessed could fill a book...

I am kind of concerned, as I am currently a full time college student (as well as a full time corporate drone),desperately trying to get an education t hopefully make a difference. I was thinking of going into one of the "helping" professions, such as social work. I am upset to hear that research is showing that the bully mentality is MORE prevalent there, than in the slimeball corporations. I seriously need some direction here, as I would like to be part of a solution, not continue buying into the problem.

I would say that you should look at ways of dealing with clients as an individual, not a part of a sick or dysfunctional agency environment. The kids and counselors that I worked with were an amazing group of people. The program director, case manager, and division V.P. were oversexed, lying, conniving manipulators. And that's being kind...

I am a former foster child and current child advocate. To find out more about me, you can visit www.sunshinegirlonarainyday.com The world needs caring and committed social workers. I can imagine that caseloads, paperwork, troubled families and frequent sad outcomes can be overwhelming at times. But social workers are in the position to make such a wonderful difference. So, please, Dharmadee, don't rule out going into social work. Just try to keep your youthful idealism, even in the face of red tape and beaurocracy. I'd also like to invite current social workers to anonymously share your experiences with me anytime. I have a blog at http://sunshinegirlonarainyday.blogspot.com/ I don't want what I am sharing at this blog to be one-sided. I am hearing from foster parents, foster youth, foster alumni, researchers and educators. But I don't have the inside view of what it's like to work in social services. Mainly what is shown in the news is worst case scenario, and not the victories that take place. Please just keep it in mind. Again, you can submit your concerns and experiences anonymously, Lisa
